A classic chart to counter the wisdom of crowds idea. US Americans are absolutely clueless about how common things are. They think over a quarter of Americans are Native Americans, one in five Americans is transgender, over a quarter of the population are Muslim, one in five households earn over half a million dollars. The right answer to all of these questions is 1%. They build their worldview on totally incorrect assumptions towards reality. Data literacy matters.

I've verified this story. Holy fuck.

Fun fact: a Brazilian reporter went to Eduardo Bolsonaro’s home in Texas to ask questions about Flávio’s money laundering, and Eduardo Bolsonaro called ICE to have the reporter arrested. If the reporter hadn’t held dual citizenship, he would have been deported.

FYI, to achieve this blessed 3.4% real GDP growth right before the midterms, the BLS had to subtract its own estimate of inflation (the GDP Price Deflator), which it pegged at just a 2.2% annualized rate. LOL. What a complete farce.
JUST IN: The U.S. economy is growing rapidly. GDP Growth in the 3rd quarter came in at a hot 3.4%. That was even better than expected. What's driving this? 1) The big AI investment. There was another huge surge in business investment (+12.7%!) 2) Consumer spending also robust. +3.8% in Q3. That's the same as Q2 and the strongest since the end of 2024. Not everyone is feeling the benefits of this growth uptick. But anything related to AI is soaring.

I've talked a lot about Flávio Bolsonaro, the failed Brazilian candidate who fled to Miami this week and declared himself President of Brazil, because, for some reason, THAT'S a thing. We haven't talked much about his older brother, Eduardo, who is currently a resident of Houston, TX and who many thought was their father's real preferred candidate. A little background: Eduardo Bolsonaro is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, and former federal police officer who served as a Federal Deputy for the state of São Paulo. The third son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, he is a prominent conservative figure in Brazilian politics known for advocating right-wing policies and maintaining close ties with conservative political movements internationally. In June 2026, the Supreme Court of Brazil unanimously convicted Eduardo Bolsonaro of coercion during a judicial proceeding. The court sentenced him to four years and two months in prison after prosecutors proved he used his political platform to lobby foreign officials - including members of the Trump administration - to enact sanctions and tariffs on Brazilian officials in an attempt to halt the prosecution of his father, Jair Bolsonaro. Because Eduardo Bolsonaro has been living in the United States, he was sentenced in absentia, leading Brazilian authorities to declare him at-large, issue an arrest warrant, and request an Interpol notice for his arrest. So, when people are saying #DeportTheBolsonaros, they are talking about more than Flávio. To reiterate, the United States should not be harboring fugitives who have done real harm to their home countries. The Bolsonaro brothers should be returned to Brazil to face justice.

So much error finding in piketty et al just to come up with the same qualitative result: top 10% share of income is higher now then in the early 1900, rising since the ~80ies

The original PS 2003 saga also continues with problems in the second half of their chart (1960-present). A few months ago Vincent and I released a replication and update of their full series, which found more denominator problems in the PS original - especially after 1986. As with their other work, these errors exaggerated inequality levels from the 1980s-present.

In Brazil there is a general acceptance on both sides that their own side is corrupt. Anyone intelligent on the right knows the Bolsonaro’s are up to their neck in all sorts of shit, but they just think the other side is worse The left know full well their side is corrupt and at a bare minimum, allow and facilitate the existence of the Cartels and enrichment of their party members, but they see the Bolsonaro’s as just an attempt to replace it with a larger scale corruption of international capital, reducing Brazil’s sovereignty and independence. You can’t really see Brazilian politics as just good vs corrupt or left vs right economic arguments, there’s a lot of strings attached on both sides
Reading posts by foreigners about Brazil, I get the impression that you're not aware of the full extent of the accusations against Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, or of the available evidence of his corruption. So I'd like to kindly invite you to really get to know Flávio. A thread 🧵🇧🇷

Reminder that Jair Bolsonaro almost certainly tried to kill Lula, his VP, and a Supreme Court justice after the last election before this one. MAGAs who support Bolsonaro probably don't know this because they don't read real news. And if they do know it, they're probably in favor of it. Do you think that they would show any more concern if their domestic political enemies were targeted? richardhanania.com/p/embraci…

We can blame the top 1% who contribute 17% to the global GHG emissions. On the other hand, it's worth noting that the next 49% contribute 75% of the net global GHGs. It's the bottom 50% who are getting fucked by pretty much anyone who can read this post.

Like in Brasil, Meta is censoring politicians and political campaigns in US
Meta has suddenly suspended the No Kings Instagram account in the middle of the No Kings' national day of action. This shocking censorship comes just weeks before the midterm election.

This story is extremely important: A whistleblower revealed that Brazil's far-right Bolsonaro family dynasty met with Meta to discuss US plans to interfere in Brazil's election, to prevent Lula from winning. Lula's Facebook and Instagram accounts were censored a few days before the first round of the presidential election. This had a huge impact on the election, because Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which are all owned by Meta, are the most popular apps in Brazil, and are hugely influential all across Latin America. (Jair Bolsonaro's son Flávio was declared the winner of the first round of the vote, by a narrow margin.) Meta later admitted that Lula's accounts had been restricted, but it claimed that this was supposedly due to a "technical error"... The whistleblower who disclosed this is Nadia Beller, a Bolivian journalist who was almost killed by hitmen hired by Fernando Cerimedo, a far-right Argentine political operative who oversees election interference, bots, and disinformation campaigns. Cerimedo is closely linked to the US government and has worked for pretty much every right-wing leader in Latin America. He was photographed with Donald Trump Jr. and members of the Bolsonaro family, and he received an award at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida a few months before he was arrested for the failed assassination attempt against Beller, his pregnant ex-girlfriend. This TREASON is beyond words. Not only did Musk shut down Starlink to Ukraine, he enabled Russia's intercept of a Finnish satellite that was helping Ukraine. .
SpaceX Blocked A U.S. And NATO Satellite to Assist a Russian Intercept After Crippling Ukraine's Air Defenses The Math Proves the Reality that Musk doesn't want you to see. On Oct 13-14, SpaceX restricted Starshield/Starlink during a 39-missile Russian attack, cutting Ukrainian drone intercepts by 23% and stranding U.S. personnel in Kyiv. Forty-eight hours later (Oct 15), SpaceX blocked U.S.-licensed NRO, Space Force, and NATO radar satellite ICEYE-X36 in orbit so Russia's COSMOS 2612 weapon could intercept it (99.89%-99.98% posterior) Our Model Demonstrates that the Russian intercept of the US/NATO ICEYE X-36 satellite (contemporaneous with the throttling of Starlink) would not have been possible, and almost certainly not been attempted, without SpaceX resources. At a material opportunity cost, Russia sprinted its COSMOS satellite to intercept ICEYE X36. Based on a previous attempt in June during which X36 maneuvered to evade COSMOS, Russia knew that this would be successful only if X36 could not maneuver. On October 15, SpaceX fixed X36 in place by issuing a collision alert for a sub-kilometer approach with its Starlink 35856 when SpaceX's own data shows that the actual distance was 4.8-5.0x as great. SpaceX issued no warning to COSMOS despite the fact that its sprint was far more threatening than the stable X36 orbit. SpaceX did not maneuver its Starlink 35856 satellite to clear the supposed collision risk. How, absent coordination with SpaceX, could Russia have known that SpaceX would take actions that (a) misrepresented the danger posed by X36, and (b) resulted in the fixing of X36 thereby enabling COSMOS's successful intercept? Thus, SpaceX was directly involved in simultaneously compromising Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities. The conjunction of these two events makes innocent explanations untenable. The Pentagon Capture & Iran Round Two Trap: Pentagon CTO Emil Michael who cashed out $7M–$35M from Musk’s inner-circle SpaceX vehicles (M8/Gigafund 0.1 and M6/Valor M33 II) and KQ Partners / xAI (selling xAIfor $5M–$25M three days before taking over CDAO/OSCand 21 days before SpaceX bought xAI, while keeping M8, M6, M9, M10 & Nomadic open) and Pete Hegseth purged rival Anthropic in two hours, surrendered combat command over US drones used to attack Iran to Starlink’s "Terms of Service," and on October 2 named Musk Co-Director of Project Meridian to design the Pentagon's "Future of Warfighting" just as America enters Iran Round Twowith depleted Patriot/THAAD magazines and Russia feeding U.S. warship/aircraft locations to Tehran. SpaceX’s actions in Ukraine raise serious questions about its alignment with US security interests and its reliability as a cornerstone of US defense. These questions are particularly troubling given the effectively irreplaceable position SpaceX has been granted by the Hegseth/Emil Michael Pentagon. $SPCX $TSLA Our full quantitative analysis below w/ @streetwiseprof

And again: this happened because the Bolsonaro-appointed TSE did not do its job and respond to Lula’s request, despite indicia of voter suppression. It was only after Bolsonaro also requested the extension that a Lula-appointed STF Judge granted it country-wide

In Brazil, if you are in line to vote inside the voting station you have a legal right to vote, meaning polls stay open past 5pm all the time. This is fake news. What happened was those polls were people were no longer voting closed and those where they did followed the extension
The major question in Brazil… At exactly 5pm, a code is supposed to be entered that closes and locks the voting machines. Once a machine is locked, it can’t accept any more votes. It’s irreversible. The Supreme Court extension was relayed a few minutes after polls were supposed to be closed and machines locked. So… which machines were kept open? In what districts were those machines? And why weren’t they locked at 5pm?
