Chicago is moving toward what will be a very spirited 2027 muni.election cycle. We’re going to hear a lot from a lot of candidates for mayor, City Council & school board about crime, taxes, schools, budgets and everything they believe is wrong with Chicago. But we should ask every one of them: What are you going to build? What are you going to grow? And what does winning actually look like? Chicago has spent too much time managing scarcity & measuring success by the calamities we avoid. Avoiding disaster is necessary. BUT It is not a vision. Population policy IS fiscal policy. We can’t keep looking for more ways to tax people, we need more people in the tax base. So the day the mayor is inaugurated in 2027, start a 10-year clock: 3 million Chicagoans by 2037. We’re at roughly 2.73 million today. That means gaining about 268,000 people…74 new Chicagoans a day for a decade. Ambitious? Absolutely. Impossible? Nope. Phoenix, Houston & San Antonio have all experienced sustained periods of growth around that pace. If they can grow, why can’t we? And let’s not be scared to say big numbers out loud. Publish them. Measure them. Put up a scoreboard. It’s easy to promise to “strengthen our communities,” “improve our schools” + “grow our economy.” If there’s no number attached, everybody can claim victory. Let’s be bolder. 3 million Chicagoans. 125,000 new homes. 375,000 CPS students. By 2037. Then every year, tell us where we stand. The next election shouldn’t just be a competition over who can best manage what Chicago has left. Tell us what you’re going to build. Tell us what you’re going to grow. Give us a number. And let us hold you to it. The candidate who does that will win the election and the Mayor who does it will win the future.

The doctor who delivered Dolly Parton in a one-room Tennessee cabin in 1946 was paid with a sack of cornmeal. Her father farmed other people's land and could not read or write. Eighty years later, the reading program she built in his name has mailed more than 300 million books. She wrote "I Will Always Love You" on the same afternoon she wrote "Jolene," as a goodbye to Porter Wagoner, and released it in 1974. Elvis wanted it. The night before the session, Colonel Tom Parker called and said Presley would only record it if they got half the publishing, meaning half of everything the song ever earned. She had been in Nashville ten years by then. She said no, and cried all night. Whitney Houston cut her version in 1992, held number one for fourteen weeks, and Forbes later put Parton's royalties from it near $10 million. She put some of that money into an office complex in Nashville and called the place the house that Whitney built. Dollywood opened in Pigeon Forge in 1986 because she wanted paychecks in the county she came from. Around 4,000 people work there now. Three million visitors come every year. The University of Tennessee put its economic impact at $1.8 billion, and it is the largest employer in Sevier County. Since 2022 the company has paid tuition, fees, and books in full for every worker from their first day, seasonal hires included. Wildfires tore through those mountains in November 2016, killing fourteen people and destroying more than 2,400 buildings. Her foundation was handing out money within 48 hours. Every family that lost a home got $1,000 a month for six months, regardless of income. The final check was $5,000. Total delivered: $8.9 million. In April 2020 she sent $1 million to Vanderbilt for coronavirus research. When Moderna's vaccine results ran in the New England Journal of Medicine that November, her fund appeared in the footnotes. Carl Dean, her husband of nearly sixty years, died in March 2025. The note she wrote to fans afterward ended with the same five words she wrote for Porter Wagoner back in 1974. She died in Nashville today. Her family asked that instead of flowers, people give to the Imagination Library, which still mails 3.4 million books a month to children who will never get to meet her.
A message from the family of Dolly Parton.

BRAND new Si Woo Kim story: There’s a solid Korean bbq restaurant I always go to when I’m in Detroit. I text Si Woo, wanna grab dinner tonight at this place? He goes sure. He searches the name of the restaurant on Google Maps, and without much thinking starts driving. But before it’s too late, he realizes that he’s about to go across the US border into Canada! There was a restaurant under the SAME NAME closer to him in Canada 😂 He doesn’t have a passport, just his wallet. He tries to turn back, but it’s already too late, it’s a one way and there are multiple signs telling him he can’t turn back. He drives to the gate and talks to the officer. I’m driving to dinner with a friend, I came here by accident. The officer goes, ok don’t worry, happens all the time actually. But I can’t let you go back so you have to go across to Canada and then talk to the officers on the other side. He drives across, waits in line for 45min. He finally gets to an officer and he tries to explain. He’s super nervous but tries to explain what happened. He points to his courtesy car and says I’m here for the golf tournament. This officer is not sure what to do so they drive the car to the side and calls another officer… then another… then another until 8!!! officers are surrounding his car and talking to him and each other. They check his cars for weapons, asks him if he has any drugs or weapons, stuff like that and they finally let him thru 😂😂😂. Night ended with a nice kbbq dinner about 90 minutes later than we had originally planned. Never a dull moment with Si Woo. Thanks for the content my guy

32 bylines, 25 hockey games, 17 days, 14 salami-and-fontina sandwiches from Massimiliano at Manu. And maybe, just maybe, a glass of wine or two. Man, this was fun as hell. An honor, a privilege and a pleasure to work with this crew.
