The future of free speech in India was ended by Nehru on June 18, 1951. One of the reasons he pushed the First Amendment hard was that he didn't like criticism aimed at him and his govt, and the courts upholding it in the name of freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution.

Ravan is surely not ALL that bad. Just Bad Enough--to be killed. And Not Good Enough--to be kept alive. Karna is also good. Just Not Good Enough--to be left alive. And Bad Enough --to be killed. That much Bad was Bad enough, and whatever Good was not Good enough! #Itihasa101

Thank you Tushar 🙏🙂 A book with sticky notes ..now that makes me soo happy!
In this day and age, when everyone loves quoting Arthashastra loosely, @6amiji has captured the essence of this ancient text stunningly well. A book that will lead you to many more books. A must-read for people interested in political and economic commentary. Get your copy!

Well not all OGs. One totally agrees with CAS. Have written about it and spoken against the current format. Theaterisation as unique has not shown great promise for US, China. Check which war they one inspite of overwhelmimg military power. One is miles ahead of second which is distinctly ahead of third. And yet. Lexicons, flashy symbols, and platforms don't win wars. In Indian context, it has become a run to fulfill a policy statement argued by military lumanaries and arm chair strategist as a single shot solutions to all that ails is Theaterisation. A political dispensation takes it and tells, let us do it. The Can becomes too hot. Don't ask what cannot be handled. And then it becomes an excercise for more power, relevance, ranks, appointments and equity. The services can be political internally. The fall guys are ofcourse OG. Bigger, and most to lose but have to accomodate for not equivalence but for big brother duties. The unique circumstances of Indian borders, need unique solutions. Harmony has to be in synergy at top. Not at tactical levels. Even Americans are smart. They have put naval guys incharge of oceans, land guys for centra command. One will rarely see PACOM being led by an Army General. Do read my views in Preparing India for an Age of Perpetual Contestations. On Amazon.
IAF's concerns are not trivial. If they were- MoD would have overruled them a long time ago. Most certainly the PMO, which heralded the pathbreaking reform by creating the office of CDS and Dept Of Military affairs (DMA). We see a surge of Naval veterans rushing in to criticize what the CAS said recently. Brothers in OG join in enthusiastically. They make it out a case of Navy and Army agreeing but IAF playing a spoil sport. Lets consider some facts: 1. If India was to to go to full fledged war with either China or Pakistan or both simultaneously- all the IAF Sqns including all the enablers (AWACS, AEWC, Refuelers, EW support) would be involved. There is no question of distribution of assets- it would be all in. Also, the IAF assts could be re/deployed amongst theaters in matter of hours. Whereas in case of IA and IN, it is unlikely that the entire force could even be mobilized in that time. It is also unlikely that all the key strike elements will be engaged in all the scenarios. 2. Whether the war is over land or sea, IAF would be involved in enabling IA and IN. Whereas, the IN can do very little to support IA in case of purely land centric conflict and vice versa. It makes eminent sense for the two services to agree to theaterization. There is no conflict over resources and area of ops. They get to keep what they have, and fight how they do now. There is no challenge of coordination or resource sharing with the other service. 3. IAF stands out as rare dissenter as the issue of resource sharing and method of resource sharing is critical to how IAF would fight. 4. Let there be theaters, with nominated TC. There is no need for them to be overlapping. Army can lead the land theaters, 2 or 3, which can be geographically earmarked. Navy can have maritime theater, extending from our shoreline, the outer limits determined by our national resources and our strategic ambition. As such there is very little overlap between the two (land and sea). Let there be only one theater iro employment of air power- entire Indian territory. Air defence, air space management and conduct of air offensive/defensive operations be controlled by this theater 5. Each war/conflict would have directives issued by the political leadership. COSC led by CDS would convert those to military directives. Thereafter the force application must be synergized under a join fire plan created by a joint staff. COSC would nominate the lead TC. The resources required for the campaign would be assigned by the joint force HQ. As per the proposal sent by Gen Chauhan to the MoD, which carries consent of all including IAF- creation of a joint force HQs responsible for resource allocation and joint war planning, is proposed. 6. The assumption that Air HQs want to control air assets, to the detriment of joint effort is not true. Joint effort would be synergised at the Joint HQs, under the guidance of COSC. Joint fire plan would be created by the joint staff. Nominated TC would be assigned the resources required. This plan looks different from the clean organogram created by US and China model; however, it is more reflective of our requirements, challenges and more importantly resources.

I almost fully agree with everything here, Sridhar, but this is where some semantic reclaiming is important. At least from my lens, the word “religion” has to be separated from “Dharma”. Many claim to be religions, not all are Dharmic. In that lens, post-religious. Only thing I’ll disagree is the importance of “belief” vs “ritual” for all but that is pedantic. In some ways, the ritual - whatever it be - is more important. Similarly, “modernity” has to be separated from its common connotation (not denotation) of “westernisation”. So many debates we had in high school about “is modernisation westernisation”? We need to move beyond that. In the sense of socio-economic-political mobility modernisation most deeply aligns with Dharma. The most important building block of our civilization is the family, not the caste or community as some consociational players still want. It is where our duties lie, family and nation/civilization. However when it comes to the state, the rights are in the form of an individual - ideally, and over time. To protect the minority within the minority. We have a lot to learn from Israel on the demographic front, above all a sense of civilisational pride. Not all lessons are transferable, maybe only half, and yes everybody will contribute in different ways. So this is not to judge anyone either, but on the basis of law of large numbers, yes.
"modernist, pro-India, anti-woke, anti-socialist, anti-Dehat and post-religious?" "Modernist and post-religious" produce demographic suicide. We are here because our ancestors had faith, no not the "spiritual but not religious" kind, I mean real faith. And then AI, which ends our intellectual pretense. What is left that is truly human? I suggest Nature, Nurture, Culture and Scripture; the core of Sanatana Dharma is that all of these are connected. Anyway I will make this prediction: religion will become even more important in the post-AI landscape.

If by Dehat we mean rural in a location-sense, a group of people who live in villages then obviously I am not anti-Dehat nor are the @JungIndien @sirfaditya folks I am sure. @svembu has shown wonderfully, for example, you can run the world’s biggest companies, in large parts at least, from villages. Rurban becomes a continuum - a game of infra and sustainable living. I am anti-Dehat, though, in the Ambedkarite sense. The idea that there could be a community veto of who you love, where you study, what your occupation is and so on. That mindset could be in cities too. Little girls being covered head to toe is unfortunately a not uncommon sight in Indian cities. I don’t think there is any need to clarify this, just like post-religious or anti-socialism need not be or modernity itself. But nonetheless it is useful. The point is not to sneer at hillybillies, the way the newly converted Romans sneered at “pagans” - very much a play on the rural polytheists being apparently boorish simpletons. For me Dehat simply means the Khap and its related apparatus. It is a reminder that our civilisation failed to have our own state in large parts for centuries and hence defensively reflexively went into this shell. Being anti-Dehat is breaking that shell, unapologetically.
I disagree with the Dehat outrage though. Dehati and proud as I wrote in the Apologetic Indian. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/…
