Kylie Jenner wore a $50 million bra on her very first Victoria's Secret walk. Supermodels used to wait over a decade to wear that bra. Victoria's Secret let her cut the line for one reason, and it's sitting right there on her Instagram profile.
For about 20 years the Fantasy Bra was basically the brand's lifetime achievement award. Tyra Banks got the $3 million one back in 1997. Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima each wore it three times over their careers. Alessandra Ambrosio waited 11 years as an Angel before she got hers. Kendall Jenner walked the show three times and never got anywhere near it.
That system made sense back when the show was on network TV. ABC or CBS aired it every December, and in 2011 more than 10 million people tuned in. Victoria's Secret controlled the biggest stage in fashion, so whoever they put in that bra became famous pretty much by default.
Then people stopped watching. By 2018 the show was down to 3.3 million viewers, the worst in its history, and the company pulled the plug the next year.
Fast forward to this weekend. The show streamed for free on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok from a studio lot in Culver City. Without a TV network handing them an audience, the brand has to borrow one, and the person on that runway with the biggest audience by a mile was Kylie.
She has about 380 million Instagram followers. The show's best night ever on TV drew 10.3 million viewers. Her account by itself is roughly 37 of those nights.
Think about it from Victoria's Secret's side. If they'd put the bra on a longtime Angel, the people who already love the show would've loved it. Putting it on Kylie means the clip lands in front of millions of people who haven't thought about Victoria's Secret in years, and a lot of them are the younger shoppers the brand has been trying to win back.
It fits the playbook Hillary Super has been running since she took over as CEO in 2024. Sales grew 15% in the first quarter and the stock posted its biggest one-day jump on record. They even changed their ticker symbol to VSXY.
That's why Kendall's three walks never got her the bra and Kylie's first one did. The bra goes to whoever can bring the most people with her, and almost nobody alive can bring more than Kylie.
