I don't imagine there are many settlers who didn't grow up near a residential school and/or Indian Hospital -- I attended high school a 15 min walk from Coqualeetza (residential school, 1886-1940; Indian Hospital, 1940-69).
Imagine revisiting yr family history w/ this evidence.

“The kind of religion that says you can treat people however you want as long as you have a personal relationship with Jesus is an abomination. It is a cancer on the body of Christ.”
The kind of pride that's existentially productive, that creates connective tissue between one's own skin and a collective body can come in many forms: one's heritage, a spiritual tradition, a sport, an artistic legacy.
Those are all contested forms, but they're also beginnings.

When kids aren't raised-educated to feel pride in something then an enemy - personal or collective - becomes existentially necessary. Identity, in such situations, is a retroactive formation. Once habitual, it's difficult to break free from. It also ruins many activist circles.

Compréhension sociologique d’élite, un genre de Kennedy en puissance.
The Carney government chose to illustrate the cover of Canada’s latest budget document in a hopeful way: electric power lines on a mountain top run down towards a valley, a glistening river flowing off in the distance. It’s an image that suggests a nation more in tune... 1/x

Why do we need an economic bill of rights? For the same reason that FDR gave:
“If history were to repeat itself & we were to return to the so-called ‘normalcy’ of the 1920’s [laissez faire capitalism]— then it is certain that even though we shall have conquered our enemies on the battlefields, we shall have yielded to the spirit of Fascism here at home.”

Something is ‘public’ not just because people use it. It is also ‘public’ because of how it is designed and governed. Unless it is designed for the common good it is not public, and vague invocations of "public interest" can conceal as much as they reveal.
Spoke with Katie Fowler at @TRF TRUST Conference this morning about AI in the public interest and how to govern AI for the common good, as I outline in my new book.

Canada’s federal budget is out on Thursday and will likely be a corporate wishlist of weapons, AI, fossil fuels, and tax cuts.
But the @CCPA has crunched the numbers to propose an alternative federal budget for working people.
Saima Desai runs through 10 of their proposals.
