“The economy’s very strong, and it has an inflation problem,” said economist Michael Strain of the American Enterprise Institute. “I don’t think those two characteristics are unrelated.”

NEW | Iran likely used its meeting with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey to pressure the trio of countries to help forge a US-Iran deal that would achieve key Iranian objectives. Iran is presumably attempting to exploit regional concerns that renewed fighting and US-Iran tensions could embroil regional countries in the future and is aiming to portray the United States as the source of the problem. It was not so long ago that Americans generally agreed about the pace, direction, and progression of courtship, writes @dcoxpolls
You meet someone through mutual friends, family, or at work, you spend time together, begin formally dating, and then enter into a relationship on the way to a more permanent commitment, which was most often marriage. Not too long after came kids.
The purpose of dating was to find a single person with whom to build a family. However imperfectly a couple might come together, the relational goals of marriage and family formation helped establish clear parameters. Increasingly, these goals are being called into question.

NEW I The Houthis almost certainly captured a major roadway segment that links Houthi frontlines on the outskirts of Taiz City to other frontlines in central Taiz Governorate on October 22. The Houthis posted footage of fighters in vehicles at various geolocated positions along a segment of the Taiz-Aden ground line of communication (GLOC) in the al Dhabab valley between al Misrakh District and Taiz City's southwestern limits. NEW | Ukrainian forces continue to face in-motion speed restrictions to SpaceX’s low-earth orbit satellite communication technology (Starlink and Starshield) that limit Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian piston engine-driven and jet-powered strike drones.
Ukrainian Presidential Advisor on Defense Technologies Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov stated on October 19 that the 160 kilometers per hour (around 100 miles per hour) in-motion speed restrictions to Ukraine’s satellite internet service as part of the Starshield package remain in place.
Beskrestnov emphasized that the Starshield in-motion speed restrictions disrupt data transmission to Ukrainian drones used to intercept Russian piston engine-driven Geran drones since the helicopters fly faster than 160 kilometers per hour.
Ukrainian forces continue to publish further details about Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi – a counteroffensive operation that fundamentally disrupted the Russian campaign for Donetsk Oblast by defeating the northern pincer that the Russian military intended to use to encircle the Fortress Belt from the north.
Senior Kremlin officials reaffirmed Russian support for Iran and explicitly defined the United States as Russia’s long-term adversary, despite the recent unilateral US concession to Moscow – offering Russia a diesel export waiver.

NEW | The Houthis are adopting new tactics to bypass Saudi air defenses, including launching various munitions at Saudi targets simultaneously and targeting locations without air defense coverage, according to an unspecified senior US official briefed on Saudi air defense efforts speaking to the Wall Street Journal on October 18.
The Houthis’ strike tactics against Saudi Arabia demonstrate how Iran and the Axis of Resistance are learning and sharing tactics to more effectively bypass adversary air defenses. This does not necessarily mean that the Houthis learned these tactics from Iran, however.
The Houthis are deploying reinforcements to Taiz Governorate, likely to try to break Yemeni government defenses surrounding Taiz City.
The Houthis have attempted to make multiple advances near the city in recent days, but Yemeni government-aligned forces have largely repelled these advances.

NEW: US and Taiwanese authorities have indicted multiple individuals for illegally reselling US-manufactured semiconductors to the People’s Republic of China (PRC); in some cases routing chips through Southeast Asia to get around US export restrictions. The PRC likely seeks to acquire US semiconductors to further PRC artificial intelligence (AI) development and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) modernization. (1/2)
Other Key Takeaway:
The PRC interfered with a Philippine medical evacuation at Second Thomas Shoal. The PRC is likely no longer abiding by a 2024 provisional agreement with the Philippines to allow resupply missions to the shoal and is trying to make Philippine positions in the South China Sea increasingly untenable.

New newsletter: WHY AMERICANS STOPPED FALLING IN LOVE
An interview with @dcoxpolls on his new book, Generation Uncoupled, including the following facts, claims, and questions:
- the share of 40-year-olds who have never been married has quadrupled since 1980
- For all the viral essays about (surely, very real cases of!) educated people finding it harder to get together these days, the entire decline in marriage rates since 1990 have come from women without a college diploma
- According to one analysis of the General Social Survey, “most of the overall downturn [in American happiness] is attributable to decline in marriage post-2000"
- Men with larger social circles tend to have much more romantic success. But that’s only true for men! The number of close friends a woman has seems to have little bearing on her ability to go on dates.”
- "attention infidelity," or "the experience of [a partner who] disappears into their smartphone and leaves us, perhaps only for a moment, but in doing so they undermine a sense of trust and understanding that builds between two people who are sharing an experience"
