The root cause of Manchester United’s current demise was the 09/10 window. Selling your best player in his prime, was an aura loss we never really recovered from and it was exacerbated by the utter shit we signed that window. Our continued success on the pitch masked a decline in recruitment astuteness but if you dig deeper the quality of our on the pitch performances were deteriorating pound for pound relative to the magnificence of 07/08. Seems crazy that almost 2 decades later we just continued to think like a second rate club - like which elite or aspiring to be elite institution would be hiring washed managers or former players with no coaching pedigree or potential to excel at the business end of European football. Worst thing is our fanbase passively accepted this lowering of the standard - getting giddy over Ole Ball for instance when you could tell long term it wouldn’t hold water. Same with Carrick tenure. The results when he came back were clearly manager bounce and lacking in the foundational principles of a club which can be cutting edge. I don’t think the fans get just how brutal a reset is needed to get this club even remotely on track. The problem with the values Sir Alex left behind is not much of it is wholly transferable to the demands of the modern game. It’s why his so called disciples are not found at the highest level. We need to look at what clubs like Barcelona do but be one step ahead - the only things which United should hold onto in terms of old school values is a commitment to exciting football and an emphasis on young players with talent. The things they also need to hang on to from prime Sir Alex is don’t hold on to any players who aren’t cut out for it. Be ruthless. If a player is a big name but ultimately isn’t a net asset to the club or a roadblock to tactical progression- get rid. He sold Ince and Hughes ffs.

The brutal truth about Manchester United… sit tight and here we go… We don’t learn from the Ole situation where we appoint a manager who was ideal for interim but was riding manager bounce and common sense management but never gonna have the minerals to take on the long term role. We signed established premier league midtable type players which isn’t going to push the needle and make us an elite outfit. We reward mediocrity, players who aren’t fit enough or consistent enough or downright incompetent are here for years without being moved on swiftly. Club has fuck all standards. Tactically we just feel so drab, there’s nothing cutting edge in terms of how we approach the game - do we possess a football identity that is the envy of Europe?
