A man who is single - handedly uniting Africans …. Needs to be highlighted ..
While the world’s gaze is locked on the Middle East, one man has spent decades quietly, relentlessly stitching the torn fabric of the Horn of Africa—especially Somalia—back together.
His name is Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey (@AMB_Affey).
Born in the harsh plains of Northeastern Kenya, he rose from local politics to become one of the youngest MPs in Kenyan history, Deputy Foreign Minister, Kenya’s Ambassador to Somalia, IGAD’s Special Envoy, and the first UNHCR Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa. He sat at the tables of Arta and Mbagathi when Somalia was still in pieces. He helped midwife transitional governments, negotiated with factions that once refused to share a room, and carried the burden of refugees and reconciliation long after the cameras left.
Now he has written the inside story.
His memoir—Baadigoobkii Nabadda ee Geeska Afrika (“The Search for Peace in the Horn of Africa”)—is not a polite diplomatic memoir. It is the raw, firsthand chronicle of the long, painful, unfinished quest to pull a shattered people back from the brink. The conferences. The betrayals. The fragile victories. The leaders he faced across the table. The moments when peace almost died and was dragged back to life.
While the world looks elsewhere, this is the book every African—especially every Somali—should read.
Because the real battle for the continent’s future is not always fought in headlines. Sometimes it is fought by one stubborn man who refuses to stop searching for peace.
Read it. The Horn is still waiting.

Decades of diplomacy, peacebuilding and leadership across the Horn of Africa.
We are honoured to welcome Amb. Mohamed Abd Affey to #GSEF2026, bringing extensive experience in diplomacy, regional cooperation, peacebuilding and humanitarian leadership.
@Amb. Affey is a distinguished Kenyan diplomat, former parliamentarian and regional leader. He served as UNHCR Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and previously as UNHCR Special Envoy to the Somalia Refugee Situation, working with governments, regional institutions, the private sector, diaspora communities and international partners to advance durable solutions across the region.
He previously served as IGAD Special Envoy to Somalia, supporting peace, national reconciliation and state formation, and as Kenya’s Ambassador to Somalia, where he contributed to the peace process that led to the formation of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Institutions. He also served as a Member of Kenya’s National Assembly and Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At GSEF 2026, Amb. Affey brings an important perspective to conversations on inclusive governance, regional integration and strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the wider East African region.
We look forward to welcoming Amb. Affey to GSEF 2026 and to the valuable contribution he will bring to the Forum.

On the occasion of the National Independence and Unification, it is important to understand what the historical record reveals about the unification of the Somali territories. The historical evidence demonstrates that both the British and Italian administrations supported and facilitated the process of unification, working with Somali leaders to ensure the peaceful establishment of a single Somali Republic.
Before unification, the two territories, in the spirit of nationalism, reached agreement on the following fundamental principles:
1. The adoption of a single provisional constitution, approved by both legislatures. This provisional draft constitution was developed in the south, but submitted to the northern parliament which made few changes and approved.
2. The adoption of one national flag, which was first raised at Khairiya Square in Hargeisa on 26 June 1960 during Somaliland's independence celebrations, in the presence of a delegation from southern Somalia led by the Speaker of Parliament, Aden Abdulle Osman, symbolizing the shared commitment of both territories to unite only five days later.
3. The merger of the two legislatures into a single national parliament, consisting of 33 representatives from Somaliland and 90 representatives from southern Somalia.
4. The designation of Mogadishu as the capital of the new Somali Republic.
5. The establishment of a parliamentary, multi-party system of government.
Following independence and unification on 1 July 1960, the process of building a unified state began. This included harmonizing the legal systems, integrating state institutions, unifying the taxation system, merging the civil service and security forces, and consolidating other administrative structures into a single national government. These measures reflected the shared commitment of both territories to establish one sovereign and unified Somali Republic.

A memoir layered with lived experience, statecraft and quiet reflection. Timely, grounded and worth engaging.

I vividly remember that fateful day, some 20 years ago.
A plane carrying leaders of #Somalia’s Islamic Courts Union unexpectedly landed in Nairobi, Kenya, igniting intense debate and international scrutiny. The U.S. and Ethiopia watched closely, wary of the high-ranking figures on board. Amid this tension, Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey (@AMB_Affey) worked tirelessly behind the scenes, navigating delicate diplomacy and looming threats to secure their release. That day remains a vivid reminder of Somalia’s fragile journey toward reconciliation, captured in his memoir “Baadigoobkii Nabadda Geeska” (The Pursuit of Peace in the Horn).
