몇 년 전에 성인이 되어서는 처음으로 장례를 치뤘는데, 장례 이틀차인가 상 치룰 때 장의사님이 절하며 작게 곡소리(아이고~)를 내라고 했다. 그래야 혼란스러울 망자가 가족들 목소리 듣고 갈길 찾아간다고. 그런데 굳이 그런 영적인 이유가 아니어도 곡소리는 필요했다는 생각이 든다.

삶이 그렇듯 그래도 다 살아진다는 게 위안이자 저주 같았다. 중요한 배움도 있었다. 그 때 상실이 겹치며 몸이 안 좋아졌고 살도 많이 빠졌다. 그 해 겨울은 몸이 아파 누워만 있기도 했다. 하지만 그렇게 바닥을 치는 것도 일어나는 것도 살아감의 일부라는 생각이다.

하여튼 메테오를 맞고 자아가 박살난 뒤로 이 세상이 그런 슬픔과 상실 앞에 차곡차곡 쌓이고 살아낸 사람들의 공간이라는 생각에, 다들 이보다 더한 아픔을 지고도 살아간다는 사실이 놀라웠고 지난 날의 내가 뼈저리게 부끄러웠다. 무교인데도 그 뒤로 기도를 많이 한다.

Seeing The Devils reminded me of how stuffed crocodiles were sometimes hung from the ceilings of churches to symbolize dragons. This seems to have been a 15th-16th century trend.
