A circulating post claims that a Nigerian man is illegally contesting local government elections in Johannesburg, in the country’s Gauteng province, and makes several discriminatory claims about migrants. But this is false – the supposed candidate does not exist. africacheck.info/nigerian_sa…

Last week in Nairobi-Kenya, at the @AfricaCheck Summit, I shared some data interpretation techniques with fact-checkers. The idea: to see claims not just as ends in themselves, but as building blocks for datasets that reveal patterns, track trends, and enable deeper analysis.

A pre-election poll posted to social media claims that South Africa’s African National Congress has reached 43% support in the City of Tshwane. But the poll is fake; legitimate surveys put the party’s support in Tshwane between 24% and 26%. africacheck.info/anc_poll

A graphic quoting South African president Cyril Ramaphosa as promising to protect ANC party members from prosecution is fake. Neither the presidency nor the ANC published it, and there’s no evidence that Ramaphosa said anything like this. africacheck.info/ramaphosa_q…

🇰🇪 5th Africa Facts Summit 2026 | Nairobi, Kenya 📍 ➡️On 21 October, our Zimbabwe Country Manager, @GodsFlower_ , represented us at the 5th Africa Facts Summit. The event brought together stakeholders working to strengthen information integrity and address misinformation and disinformation across Africa. ➡️One key takeaway: building a resilient information ecosystem takes more than fact-checking. It also requires resilient organisations, sustainable funding, strong relationships with audiences, and a deeper understanding of the communities we serve. ➡️Discussions on information manipulation in conflict settings highlighted the importance of language and context. Words can carry different meanings across communities, and without local context and language data, efforts to identify and address misinformation may fall short. ➡️As AI reshapes how information is created and shared, our responses must be evidence-informed, people-centred, and grounded in local realities. ➡️Strengthening information integrity calls for collaboration, contextual understanding, and sustained investment in the organisations and communities helping people access and trust reliable information. ➡️We are always happy to contribute to conversations shaping a stronger, more informed Africa. Stay connected for more updates and stories advancing our continent. #WeAreWELEADAfrica #WeAreYoungPeople @CFImedias @NAYOZimbabwe @YetTrust @DeafZimTrust @NYDT1 @youth_invest @tafireitakaedza @GodsFlower_ @GlenDhliwayo @glanyline @tapiwa_chiriga @BorisCde @johncollinsZW @africaIYP @AUEUYouthLab @euinzim @GIZAfricanUnion @RetzlaffCh @Che_Guevara_ZW @NawagunaS @ngadziore @MalemaZw @LenonMount @ropamakumire @MakomboreroH @marko_muropa @namataik_ @_DASonline @DanaiDChirawu @nangozimbabwe @Zinasuzim @DougColtart @NicolaWatson13 @eva_tarie @ZimRightsLIVE @PhilFungurai @amnesty_zim @advora_1 @AnnahSande @gladyshlatywayo @Mhukatakunda @AfricaCheck @AfricaCheck_KE

A graphic circulating ahead of South Africa’s local government elections, seemingly from the SABC, quotes ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula as saying the votes of people who died during apartheid should be counted for his party. But the quote and graphic are fabricated. africacheck.info/mbalula_quo…

🌍 Spoke on my first panel at #AfricaFactsSummit in Nairobi: when Rwanda’s rains came late, people fasted and prayed because no one had explained climate change simply. Speed matters, but trust matters more, and it must be built before the rumour arrives. 🎙️ @AfricaCheck_Fr
