Longer lives are one of the greatest achievements of our time. Global life expectancy today is 8.4 years higher than it was in 1995. Longer lives have transformed how long we work, participate, make decisions and rely on public institutions. But our systems and human rights protections have not kept pace. Older people continue to face age discrimination and gaps in the protection of their autonomy, health, security and participation.
As people live longer, our institutions must ensure they can continue to exercise their rights fully and equally at every age. The UN Human Rights Office has found that existing international human rights protections do not adequately address the specific barriers older persons face, and work is now underway at the Human Rights Council on a new legally binding international instrument. The task is to ensure that the rights people hold throughout their lives are effectively protected as people live longer.

Today is the International Day of Older Persons!
Under the theme "The Age of Longevity," it is a call to examine how societies can ensure that longer lives translate into healthy, productive, dignified and equitable lives for all.

Your calves are a second heart.
Most people never turn it on.
Each time you walk or rise onto your toes, your calf muscles compress the deep veins and help propel blood back toward your heart against gravity.
One-way valves keep it from falling back.
Healthy calves eject about 65% of that venous volume in a single contraction. That is the pump that was built to fight pooling all day.
•Sit or stand still and the pump shuts off.
•Fluid sits in the lower legs.
•Legs feel heavy.
•Ankles puff.
•You move less.
•Valves take more load.
•Risk of varicosities and blood clots goes up.
You need the pump on.
Do this every hour you sit or stand in place:
•20–30 slow toe raises
•2-second squeeze at the top
•Drop your heels.
•Repeat.
Coffee line. Brushing teeth. End of a Zoom.
How many hours do you go without a single toe raise?

Patients, loved ones and NHS staff will be able to call a dedicated number to request an urgent review if a patient’s condition is getting worse and they’re concerned it’s not being listened to.

Evidence is growing that shingles vaccination may do more than just help prevent painful shingles outbreaks, including lowering risk of dementia and slowing biological aging. Now, a study suggests that the current version of the vaccine may also protect the heart. #HarvardHealth
