In less than a year HellMarch has nearly reached Platinum status on DTRPG. Thanks everyone!
This is your reminder than you CAN just do off-the-cuff, theater of the mind mass combats in D&D, Shadowdark, etc, with just a handful of d6!
HellMarch - Mass Combat is now in print, featuring gorgeous new full-cover art by @BLKfeatherPress!
These rules are for mixing Heroic and Mass Combat:
Not just heroes leading troops, but also lone heroes fighting hoards of enemies, sieges, etc.

In addition to having a few TEST PRINT, discounted copies of Titans of Fallen Earth at @awacon, we'll be offering our original hardcover setting book the Chronicles of Aeres (which includes the vastly updated digital copy free,) new prints of Shadows of Padfoot Alley and the Doom that Came to Astreas with some text tweaks, and a few remaining copies of our Wilderkind supplement for @trolllordgames Castles & Crusades (we couldn't reprint this one in time so when it's gone, it's gone.)
We'll have digital copies of all our available material at convention discounts as well on DTRPG. Remember: every purchase of one of our physical TTRPG books includes the up to date digital download for free, we do NOT nickel and dime you for this!
Along with limited edition tapes of @Gemini_Echoes break-out hit Dungeon synth albums, Darkrune - Book of the Black Rose and Nocturnes & Nightmares, we'll also be selling most of his horror anthology and cyberpunk comic books, "The Defectives," "Vitals," and "Morbid Musings!"
We'll also have a "bargain bin" box stuffed with TTRPG books and supplements, some old, some new, all very reasonably priced. We've got some B/X stuff in here, an old Holmes book, lots of 5E, some Palladium, you'll just have to take a look!
AND we'll be selling Dominic Martyne's acclaimed new D&D history book, D&D: An American Institution! That's just at our booth. Outside the booth, we've been selected to head up a portion of the con's TTRPG area this year. I'll be running games of Titans of Fallen Earth and showing people how to play the game every single day, almost all day! Giving away dice and other goodies too. #ttrpgs #dnd #osr #dungeonsynth
Please note the "Fighter" image here is actually from Chainmail.
This is a reference to OD&D's "Fighting Man" class that had the feature of being able to lead armies, the rules for which were in Chainmail.
Note the "Paladin" subclass (from AD&D) image is also from Chainmail.
Which edition of D&D had the best version of the following classes?
Fighter: In my opinion, 4th Edition was the best for tactical design and role fulfillment, but I love the 2nd edition fighter best (unadulterated statistical might and dominance over monsters!!) Side note: 5E barbarians nailed the core: entering a rage, dealing massive damage with a d12 hit die, and shrugging off physical trauma via damage resistances.
Magic-User: 1st & 2nd Edition offers the old-school "fragile at level 1, godlike by level 15" experience. Enough said.
Cleric: 2nd Edition has the Specialty Priest (best flavor & lore!!)
Thief: 2nd Edition - Best lassic customization!
As you can see, I sort of favor fighters ;)
Bonus Bard: 1E! Famously gated behind a torturous dual/multi-class requirement (starting as a Fighter, transitioning to a Thief, and finally training as a Druid) before you could actually play as a bard (I loved it and it felt very Bard's Tale too me at the same time.
You can add any bonus classes that you wish.
It's okay though because now your paladins don't have to be lawful or good as long as they've got big feels about something right? #dnd

Instead of trying to improve the game they've spent 50 years getting better and better at selling you a dream of a game that you might run some day
Non-bros had fifty years to make their case, and their ideas failed to transcend the soup aisle. They've given us:
Sales numbers,
Illiteracy,
And the most degenerate, common denominator, non-game slop imaginable and called it "playing D&D"
If you're too nice to grade your players per AD&D XP rules, then you're still part of the problem.

I’m too nice to say that about my players who did the exact same thing.
Creepy Castle was my friend's game!
I love that he got so many cool collabs into it right out of the gate!
10 years ago today, the first official Five Nights at Freddy's collaboration was released!
The crossover was with the 2016 game Creepy Castle, a side-scrolling adventure RPG, and featured Chica as a playable character 👀

Availability of the actually rules was not the root problem.
We needed better people.
This is a spiritual issue, with a spiritual solution.
There's a #BROSR lesson in here somewhere, I just know it.
It is the desire of every Folk D&D player and DM to never actually play D&D for realsies.

Which is also fine imho, it just needs a disclaimer, do the players know it's going to be hacked as the game goes
I assumed this would be the case, thanks for verifying it Mr Wargaming!
Folk D&D-minded people are trained to ignore what is written on the page when it runs counter to what they want it to say.
> you see a naked woman and think man
That is objectively ugly naked wokeslop that demons are trying to normalize.
- a normal straight man
The Old Lords, with both Fantastic and Man to Man Combat? Men and Ogres? Heroes and Wizards?
Great video by @NotJonMollison, highlighting just how fast and easy big skirmishes can play when you break out Chainmail in the middle of a D&D session!
I'm a sucker for the gold leaf and gilding, even / especially when RPGs pull it off well.
Bonus credit to @TheBasicExpert1 for pulling it off with red for Macuahuitl, though it seems impossible to photograph how beautiful it turned out.

Is one true language derived from the structure of reality... Or is the structure of reality derived from one true language? "In the beginning was the Word."

I can’t speak for others but my desire for robust rules has less to do with competitive and PvP play and more a desire for verisimilitude and agency. As a player, I don’t want the GM to make it up as he goes along and I don’t want no prep improvisation. I as a player want a game world with knowable rules and fixed canon so that I can appreciate its existence as a “real” secondary world. I believe agency is not really possible when it’s left to GM fiat and GM improvisation to decide. I wrote all of Arbiter of Worlds about this. It is my belief that robust rules in an objective world are most conducive to flourishing player agency, immersion, and if desired competition and PvP. The downside is they require more investment in learning and (for the GM) prep so they are not for everyone. But I personally don’t like playing with no prep role light GMs. ACKS is designed for what I want to play, not for what is easiest to GM, or most empowering to the GM.
Balanced encounters are the worst.
Maneuvering fights to their advantage, or escaping on their own judgement call, is FAR more rewarding and exciting.
Also, OD&D Hobbits (per Chainmail p43):
> Hobbits have the ability to become invisible in brush or woods
