Really glad to see Labour MPs like @BrianLeishmanMP speaking out against efforts to bring the UK back into the Single Market and European Union. As I discussed on @SAAC_Podcast, the EU was a creation of the Right, which aimed in part to limit socialist governments in Europe. 'Social Europe' has always been a mirage. scotsman.com/news/politics/s…
My book on this week's @SAAC_Podcast was 'Social Europe, the Road not Taken: The Left and European Integration in the Long 1970s' by Aurélie Andry. A fascinating look at how the European Left tried (and failed) to refashion the European Economic Community from an essentially right-wing project, created by Christian Democrats to limit domestic socialist parties' control of the economy, to a left-wing one. Contrary to many accounts which make out that the Commission presidency of Jacques Delors brought about a 'social Europe', Andry shows these supposed victories were mainly a fig leaf for the real victor: the Single Market, championed by right-wing politicians and market liberals. Ironically, the Left became dogmatic in its support for an EU which does not conform to the vision that it had tried to set out.

Excl: Scots Labour MP Brian Leishman has warned Andy Burnham against rejoining the "pro-capitalist, pro-imperialist" EU. The Alloa and Grangemouth MP revealed he voted Leave in 2016 - making him the only Scots Labour MP to have publicly backed Brexit. scotsman.com/news/politics/s…

Dan Osborn is a rare figure in American politics, and one that the democrats seriously lack. The combination of strong, charismatic & (mostly) progressive young candidates plus traditional union reps show a party learning from defeat and ready to beat back the techno-fascists

(I am aware Osborn is an independent, but if you think he won’t be seen as closer to the dems should he win then idk what to tell you)

I'm chairing a discussion about Blue Labour in a pub in Glasgow one evening next month. You don't have to be a Labour person to come along, you just need to be interested in Scottish politics. Maybe see you there? More details: eventbrite.co.uk/e/can-blue-…

I am glad to see the government unequivocally rule out crude cuts to welfare. Given we now know a white paper is due in January, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes forward
🚨 NEW: John Healey has now confirmed that Labour will not cut the welfare bill before the next general election

Socialism is supporting the local petit bourgeoisie and the more you support the local property owners the more socialist it is
Replying to @Madeline_McCant
Actual socialism is fighting for locally owned grocery stores etc (which ime are usually on par with Lidl in terms of pricing but ymmv) and publically owned transport systems to allow ease of access. Socialism doesn’t have to give into corporations just bc it’s convenient.

BREAKING: In an unprecedented comeback, Brazil's President Lula da Silva has defeated Flavio Bolsonaro, securing a 4th term in office. Lula is officially the first presidential candidate in Brazil's modern democratic history to lose the first round of voting and go on to win the runoff. Prior to the election, Lula's implied odds of victory had fallen as low as 10%. This marks one of the most remarkable political comebacks in Brazil's history.

The passion many have for returning to the EU means again embracing a system that prioritises the interests of private capital at the heart of its decision making. Rejoining the EU is not the solution to our problems. Governments taking ownership of vital industry & services is.

Reduction of working hours is an excellent socialist policy because it directly challenges the notion that capitalist development = progress. Why isn't the advancement of tech reducing the amount of labour we have to do? It's a question that capitalist media will never ask.
A 32 hour four day work week without loss in pay would do more for our overall quality of life and wellbeing than nearly any other singular socioeconomic change

For the most part, the left fundamentally does not understand what political power is, how to build it, or how to use it. As a result, we build protest movements, not political ones. This is why we get nowhere and alienate our social constituencies.
Wow. A student organizer leading protests against Zohran Mamdani tonight reveals that she previously interned for him. Now she’s leading chants against the very politician she once worked for, accusing him of prioritizing his own political advancement over the people and movements that helped bring him to power. She delivers an ultimatum: The protests can stop when Mamdani stops the sale of stolen Palestinian land in NYC and abolishes the CUNY Board of Trustees, which advances Israel’s interests within the nation’s largest urban public university system. But she makes clear that she doesn’t expect him to deliver. In her view, Mamdani has become just another politician who makes promises to movements and then fails to meet their demands once in office. What makes her testimony particularly significant is that she isn’t someone who opposed Mamdani from the beginning. She worked for him. She believed enough in his political project to participate in it. Now she’s publicly confronting him. Her speech speaks to a broader frustration among people who placed their hopes in electoral politics as a vehicle for advancing Palestinian liberation. For some, the experience hasn’t strengthened their faith in political institutions. It has deepened their distrust.
