In 2004, India’s official count said the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan had 16-18 tigers. But, visitors had not seen one in months. The truth: Sariska’s tigers had been poached to extinction. What follows is the stunning story of how a supposedly, “poor country” mobilised to save the tiger. From rebuilding its counting methods, camera traps, statistics, satellites and an app. This is the story of how a country that has learnt to lived with tigers for millennia, learnt again how to protect it. Issue 7: How India Actually Saved the Tiger, written by @sonakshi_geog, edited by @fahadmh , tracked, counted & built by @AltCarbonIndia altermag.com/articles/how-in…

It was a pleasure to present the work that @AltCarbonIndia is doing, applying AI to the Earth Sciences. The next frontier for AI is intelligence capable of understanding the natural systems of our planet. India’s biggest Sovereign AI opportunity will be to map out the physical world. This will require cutting edge labs, translational research and collaboration between engineers and scientists. Looking forward to working closely with @DrSJaishankar @orfonline to build India’s deeptech ecosystem, across our labs, scientific institutions, and manufacturing floors. 🔬 🛰️ 🇮🇳
Interesting to meet young Indian tech entrepreneurs & founders on the sidelines of Raisina Middle East. This generation thinks big and thinks boldly.

🏠 Alt Open House is back. It’s been a while since we’ve opened up our office at IISc to folks interested in what we’re building. Come by, on 7th Oct, for a tour of our labs, the equipment we use, & a closer look at how we remove CO₂. luma.com/z8io6t7v

It was a pleasure to host Hon’ble Minister Shri @ArjunsinghWB at @AltCarbonIndia’s Darjeeling-Climate Action Labs today. He spent time with our scientists, engineers, and farm partners to understand the work we’re doing on the intersection of agriculture, climate action, and earth sciences. What was striking was that he kept emphasising the need to focus on the farming communities in Bengal and undertaking cutting edge R&D to ensure we have agricultural abundance.

Today, the D-CAL (Darjeeling Climate Action Lab) team at @AltCarbonIndia opened its doors to children from the local community for a day of experiments and discovery. There were interactive demos, a few surprises and lots of “how does that work?” moments, and hopefully many future scientists & explorers in the making. Because sometimes, all it takes is one cool experiment to spark a lifelong love for science. Super proud of the team for creating that spark, and for finding meaningful ways to give back to the community we’re so fortunate to build alongside.

I'm hosting a fun quiz on Sunday at @_lagrangepoint to celebrate the latest @AlterMagIndia issue. Teams of 3 Alter Merch & @DorjeTeas for grabs Register now!
In 2004, India and Pakistan played a cricket series billed as the ‘Friendship Series’. Before the match began, the captains of both teams appeared together with a plea. It had nothing to do with cricket. What was it? (Answer in the end) We’re hosting a general knowledge quiz, moderated by @sparshselim , at @_lagrangepoint . Thank you, @itsarnavb . Alter Issue #6 launch date and time: 📅 6th September (Sunday) 🕐 2:00 PM 📍 Lagrange Point, Indiranagar RSVP: luma.com/3h3swr00 Answer: ‘Bowl’ out polio.

We cooked up something new to understand the alchemy that’s biochar. India produces around 750 million tonnes of agricultural waste every year. A lot of it ends up being burnt. One of the biggest reasons for poor AQIs is open stubble burning.

Biochar is one of the best ways to cut that down. It keeps the carbon out of the air and restores soil health. But what is biochar? How does it work? Why do we need this in an agrarian India?

We built an interactive microsite that explains every dot of the issue at hand: the problem, the science, and our work. The science of the Bengal Renaissance Project; a study in the alchemy of ash. All yours now. altcarbon.com/eli5/bengal-re…

A humble reminder that technological progress diffuses what was once considered luxury. After all, what once required an empire and emperors to summon from Himalayan ice now fits in your freezer. Oh, also, really cool sticker 😁

An ice cream is a surprisingly elaborate piece of chemistry and physics. Contrary to its name, it isn't just frozen cream. It's four separate things held together at once: • ice crystals • a sugar syrup that never freezes • air folded in by churning, and • a network of fat holding it all Disturb any one of them and the whole thing collapses. In India, that collapse happens fast. So Indian manufacturers have started rebuilding ice cream from the inside out. Some are leaning on denser, mithai-style formulations for stability. Others are freezing the product only when it's served. A few are raising protein and prebiotic fibre levels, trading sugar and fat for structure, and a healthier ice cream in the bargain. This is the story that questions what an ice cream really is, and the strange science being used to combat a ₹10 vanilla cup that gives up by the sixth spoonful. Issue 5: Designing a Summer Ice Cream for India, written by @chandhana, edited by @fahadmh, scooped, churned & built by @AltCarbonIndia altermag.com/articles/design…

What if fighting climate change could begin with a cup of tea? Using a special process called Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) across Darjeeling's tea estates, Bengaluru-based Alt Carbon is pulling carbon dioxide (CO₂) out of the atmosphere and locking it away so it can't contribute to global warming Here's how ERW works: finely crushed basalt rock is spread across tea estates. When rain falls, the basalt reacts with CO₂ dissolved in the water, converting it into stable bicarbonate ions that stay locked underground for over 10,000 years But the impact doesn't stop there. The basalt doesn't just capture carbon—it also rejuvenates degraded soil, balances pH, and boosts crop yields. Here's why this matters for India: 🌍 India's carbon emissions are projected to reach ~3.25 billion tonnes in 2026. To hit net-zero by 2070, we need every tool in the box, including carbon removal at scale. 🌱 ERW is also a lifeline for farmers. Studies across Indian farms show nearly 25% yield increases. In fact, Alt Carbon is already working with 35,000+ farmers in Bengal. It has already issued nearly 10,000 verified credits to global giants like Microsoft and Google, making it the world's largest ERW company! #ClimateChange #CarbonRemoval #SustainableAgriculture #EnvironmentalInnovation #NetZeroIndia [Climate Change Solutions, Enhanced Rock Weathering, Carbon Dioxide Removal, Sustainable Tea Farming, Net Zero India 2070]
