WHY WE RUN: BUILDING A STRONGER FUTURE FOR CANCER CARE Today evening we welcomed members of the Rotary Club of Kitende for a cancer activation run and an important conversation on the growing need to strengthen cancer care in Uganda. The session was led by our CEO @AndrewSekitolek , who shared insights into the evolving cancer burden, the importance of prevention and early detection, and the urgent need for investment in modern cancer treatment and diagnostic infrastructure. The message was clear: cancer care is time-sensitive, and strengthening treatment capacity must go hand in hand with strengthening diagnosis, infrastructure, technology and access. The discussion highlighted the role of modern technologies such as linear accelerators in delivering more precise radiotherapy, as well as the need for advanced diagnostic technologies such as PET scanning to support comprehensive cancer care. The CEO also highlighted the significant investment required to establish modern cancer services including specialised treatment facilities, CT simulation, brachytherapy, radiation-shielded infrastructure and specialist care. But infrastructure alone is not enough. We need strong partnerships, sustained investment, awareness, screening, early detection and mechanisms that can help make cancer treatment more accessible to patients and families. That is why we run. We run to raise awareness. We run to mobilise resources. We run to strengthen cancer infrastructure. We run to support access to treatment. We run for patients and families. We run for lives. As part of the activation, the Rotary Club of Kitende was also taken on a guided tour of the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya, with the tour led by Dr. Clara, Head of Department. The centre, established in 2015 with support from Rotary, represents the power of partnerships in strengthening cancer care. The visit offered an opportunity to see firsthand how investments made through partnerships can translate into real healthcare infrastructure and services. The work continues. The need is still great. And together, we can do more. Keep running. Keep supporting. Keep making noise for cancer care. #NsambyaHospital #CancerRun2026

Dr. Andrew recounted a personal story from the 2005 ambulance accident to highlight the difference between a simple ambulance ride and coordinated Emergency Medical Services (EMS), noting that the COVID-19 response helped gain political will for pre-hospital care in Uganda. He also stated that the hope is to expand training hubs across the country to fully implement the standardized ERC/UNRC resuscitation guidelines.
