We've had the Budget, but I don't think it did nearly enough to address the challenges facing our country. I spoke with @LiseMcNally about what's missing, why we need a plan to get the economy growing and bring borrowing down, and how @Conservatives would do things differently.

Tomorrow is the Budget. Andy Burnham must do the right thing and Axe the Family Farm Tax. 🚜

Labour’s handling of the Sustainable Farming Incentive has been a shambles. Bad for farmers, bad for nature.
The Conservatives have a common sense plan to back British farmers and protect our countryside.

Our farmers can’t afford another day of this Labour government.
They are taxing our farmers, taxing our fertiliser, and turned the Sustainable Farming Incentive into a complete debacle.
The Prime Minister must change course and axe the Family Farm and Family Business Tax at the Budget.

Jonathan Powell’s position as National Security Adviser is untenable.
His repeated meetings with the CCP were disclosed not by the British Government, but by Chinese Communist Party read outs, and serious questions remain over his role in the collapsed China spy case.
He is responsible for the Government’s disastrous Chagos negotiations and still advocates giving away billions in taxpayer money to surrender a British territory.
He has refused to appear before many Parliamentary committees.
Now, concerning material shared publicly by his wife raises further questions about his judgement and sharing access to sensitive information.
If he were a Minister, he would have to appear in front of Parliament to answer for these glaring concerns.
Instead, the man running our foreign policy and national security refuses any scrutiny.

Good to meet with the @MoorlandAssoc to talk about our moorlands.
As Shadow Minister for Nature, it’s essential to discuss the practical issues facing upland management with those who work closest to our landscapes. (1/2)

Proud to speak & vote in support of @Conservatives plans to scrap Inheritance Tax on family homes, businesses & farms
Families should be able to pass on the homes, farms & businesses they have spent a lifetime building without facing a huge tax burden at an already difficult time
Our national security cannot wait.
The Conservatives have put forward a fully funded plan to increase defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2030.
With the Budget next week, I really hope Labour adopts our plan. We cannot afford to put our defence at risk.

Labour’s handling of the Sustainable Farming Incentive has been a complete and utter mess - and now they can’t even answer basic questions.
They closed the scheme without warning in March 25 and then proceeded to slash the budget.
The result - demand naturally built up - so much so, that when the scheme finally reopened, it couldn’t support the high number of applications.
Through their choices, Labour made the Sustainable Farming Incentive a first come, first served scheme, based on who could hit ‘apply’ the quickest.
This has been a disaster for our farmers and for nature.
This debacle cannot continue.
When the then Foreign Secretary tells me directly that all levers are on the table to remove Shabir Ahmed, the abhorrent ringleader of the Rochdale grooming gang, from the UK, why is he still here three months later?
One of the most important parts of my job is making sure local voices are heard in Westminster.
It was lovely to meet Alice recently and hear from her mum, Lesley, about the challenges of getting the specialist care Alice needs and the enormous pressure this puts on families.
Could the Mandelson appointment scandal happen all over again?
Gov has accepted some of our @CommonsForeign recommendations, strengthening scrutiny of future ambassadorial appointments. But Ministers still haven’t guaranteed our cross-party committee the power to veto them.

Andy Burnham must get a grip of the real challenges facing our rural communities.
But stacking a new fertiliser tax on top of the SFI shambles, giving away our food laws to the EU and hammering hard-working families with vindictive death taxes isn’t a strategy, it’s pushing British farming to the brink.
