🇪🇺 The European Commission’s 2026 Türkiye Report is out — and Turkey’s response is textbook selective reality rejection. The report is blunt: accession talks remain frozen since 2018. The gap between Ankara’s stated goal of EU membership and actual delivery has widened further. Core political criteria are moving in the wrong direction. Main findings from the Commission • Democracy, rule of law & fundamental rights: Early stage of preparation with clear backsliding. Intensified arrests and judicial actions against elected officials, opposition figures (including major pressure on the CHP), civil society, activists and journalists. Concerns over judicial independence, media freedom and political pluralism have intensified.

Turkey has become a large-scale detention state with political prisoners on a scale that exceeds many authoritarian benchmarks, including Russia .) • Economy: Positive assessment. Turkey has a functioning market economy, has made progress on economic and monetary policies, and has the capacity to cope with competitive pressures inside the Union. Trade with the EU is at record levels (~€218 billion). • Strategic role: Explicit recognition of Turkey’s contribution to European security, defense industry, connectivity, and the resilience of supply/value chains. 💥(How Turkey is considered a security partner when it threatens daily Greece and Cyprus? It mentions the embargo on Cypriot aircraft and ships from Turkish airspace and ports in the passing but not demand immediate application of rule of reciprocity) • Cyprus & Eastern Mediterranean: Continued non-recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, advocacy for a two-state solution (contrary to UN resolutions), criticism of the Turkey-Libya maritime MoU, and ongoing issues in the Aegean/Eastern Mediterranean.
 (No mention by EU that the Turkish military occupation of northern Cyprus is unacceptable) (Again,the EU stays diplomatic instead of clearly stating that Turkey’s expansionist positions and actions constitute a real threat to European security and the sovereignty of EU member states.) Turkey’s MFA response (Statement No. 212) Ankara’s reaction is sharply selective and provocative. It rejects the entire political, judiciary and fundamental rights section as “unfounded,” “prejudiced,” reflecting “double standards” and a mindset that has “lost its credibility.” It accuses the report of endorsing “maximalist” Greek and Greek Cypriot claims while ignoring the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Eastern Mediterranean assessments and criticism of the Libya MoU are dismissed as lacking any legal basis. Then the tone flips. The same statement welcomes the economic findings as “significant,” praises the references to connectivity, supply chains, defense and security, and immediately reiterates Turkey’s “justified and legitimate expectation” of Customs Union modernization. In short: the parts that matter most for actual accession (the Copenhagen political criteria) are dismissed as biased. The parts that suit Turkey’s interests are embraced and turned into demands for deeper economic integration. The Commission’s position remains consistent: Turkey is a strategic partner, and cooperation continues in areas of mutual interest (on a phased, proportionate and reversible basis). But the fundamental reasons the negotiations have been frozen since 2018 are still unaddressed. 🔥 The elephant in the room: Turkey wants the benefits of closer EU relations and economic integration without aligning with EU values, the rule of law, or respecting the sovereignty of EU member states. A delusional and arrogant candidate that rejects the basic rules of the club it claims it still wants to join.
