Always thought PTI is closest to the AAP phenomenon: 'post-ideological' (post secular/social justice) stance, focus on corruption as the main political issue ('sab politician chor hai' narrative), and led by a populist who built up a crusading 'anti-establishment/outsider' image.
Their different fates notwithstanding, PTI & BJP have arisen from the same class basis. Conservative middle class supporters, religious revivalism, new media, hugely popular with the anti-progressive coalition that developed after the socialist wave of the 1970s. Thoughts?

Everybody is quoting "World Bank data" to claim dramatic poverty reduction in India. If you read the fine print, the base data for this is the Consumption Expenditure Survey conducted by Modiji's NSSO/NSO. The World Bank uses this base data to draw inferences.

As I keep saying, a fight with the executive is inevitably a fight with the judiciary in weak constitutional democracies

A classic chart to counter the wisdom of crowds idea. US Americans are absolutely clueless about how common things are. They think over a quarter of Americans are Native Americans, one in five Americans is transgender, over a quarter of the population are Muslim, one in five households earn over half a million dollars. The right answer to all of these questions is 1%. They build their worldview on totally incorrect assumptions towards reality. Data literacy matters.

To suggest that a country should build expensive infrastructure without forward planning or usage modelling is the mirror image of say Lalu saying in the 90s that we should not build infrastructure at all. Please only build if you can reliably model that usage will come. Public monies is not an unlimited asset. It should be deployed in the most efficient manner possible.
Always build infra, the usage will come. The initial reluctance will change when speeds are faster and more shipments can happen in the same time. This oh-how-dare-this-poor-country-build-highways because look at this usage metric - is a really short sighted piece of analysis.

If if I remember correctly, Gandhi expressed this insecurity too - his childhood flirtation with meat eating, in the hopes that he would be 'strong like Muslim boys'. A childhood friend (Gujarati Hindu) once used the same argument of 1 Muslim = 10 Hindu (cont), curiously (cont)

I write for @TheIndiaForum on wave of protests since the summer, framing it as a second republican upsurge (alongside CAA/farmers movt): the first time since the 70s/80s that people have taken to streets to reclaim the meaning & purpose of Indian republic theindiaforum.in/politics/in…

A wave of grassroots republicanism is unsettling the exclusion and majoritarianism of the Hindu republic. Can it build a political public that connects the aspirations of young people to a broader coalition of the urban poor, farmers, workers, marginalised castes, and religious minorities? @AsimAli6 writes theindiaforum.in/politics/in…

Had analysed this peculiar mix of fear, envy and desire of Islam in the Hindutva worldview using Jacques Lacan's concept of "social phantasm". telegraphindia.com/opinion/a…
Replying to @gauravsabnis
Hindutvawadis created a strawman Islam for the purpose of demonizing muslims and fell in love so hard with their own strawman that they are transforming actual Hinduism into it.

This is a very general view of Indians by the Israelis. There should be a case study on Indian subservience to Israel out of nowhere. They hate us. Ridicule us. But still enjoy the largest external support besides the US from India. 🤷
But Hindutva thugs be like: But saar we love Israel.. 😂

This SIR designed to root out alien infiltrators has unearthed a grand total of 1600 foreigners in six states with an electorate of just under a 100 million, according to the Hindustan Times. Of the nearly 10 million names deleted in Karnataka, just 716 were foreigners.
So much for all the loud claims made by the likes of Modi, Shah and others BJP leaders. This is not even a rounding error and great work by @himansshhi to contact all the CEOs to compile this.

The attached AI picture is a perfect distillation of how the RSS ideology views the ordinary Muslim and Hindu. Hence the need for a permanent right-wing militia which also exerts control on state power. Thats the only way to keep Hindus secure in a country which is 80%+ Hindu.

This was Golwalkar in Bunch of Thoughts: "What do we see today when we look at ourselves in a mirror? Do we find any sign of manliness & strength. Without an able body we can't achieve anything". 100 years on, they still see the default Hindu as a weak-kneed coward.
