We say "Naloxone Saves Lives." And it does. But, in our new study, led by @therealMikeToce of @BostonChildrens, US states that expanded naloxone access did not experience a significant decline in fatal overdoses in youth
🔍 Key Study Details:
- Outcome: Opioid overdose deaths in youth aged 15-24
- Exposures: Naloxone access laws
- Study population / period: US states 1999-2021
- Results: Naloxone access laws were linked to a reduction in overdose deaths, but this decrease was not statistically significant
🤔 Interpretation:
Previous studies highlight that naloxone access laws may be lifesaving, but our findings suggest the effect may not be as impactful for youth. Why?
- Many youth who overdose don't have a long history of substance use; they might not be aware of naloxone and its uses
- Youth may be unaware of their ability to access naloxone through pharmacies
- Pharmacies might deny youth (esp. teens under 18) naloxone
- Many youth use drugs alone; even if a young person has naloxone from a pharmacy, they may not have someone around to administer it
Please, spread awareness about naloxone, especially to youth -- and to the pediatricians, parents, and other trusted adults in their lives!
