The April Mammal of the Month is the pygmy rabbit! Pygmy rabbits only occur in the intermountain west of the US in sagebrush habitats and consume toxic sagebrush year-round. They are also 1 of only 2 North American leporids to dig their own burrow systems!
Recently, a petition to list the pygmy rabbit under the ESA was submitted by @Defenders @wildadvocate @CenterForBioDiv and @wildearthguard.
To stay up to date on research in NV and WA follow @pygmyrabbitgirl and @NerkowskiStacey. And to help collect information about RHDV2, report any suspicious rabbit/hare deaths to your local wildlife agency! @NvDOW @MyODFW @UtahDWR @WDFW
Meet the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse! "Salties" are an Endangered Species found only in the salt marshes of the San Francisco Bay Area. They can survive drinking only salt water and they are star aquatic athletes capable of swimming non-stop for several hours!
Habitat protection and restoration are the top conservation priorities. Adapting to sea level rise and restoring climate-resilient habitat are critical for the mouse's future.
@CaliforniaDFW, @USFWS, @CA_DWR, @EBRPD, and other agencies are working to restore habitat. Follow @TheSaltyMouse for news and updates. And look for future research updates from @iheartrats, @cmaylward, @MarkJStatham1, @theMECU, and more!
