What is a red wolf❓ Our team sequenced the mitogenomes of historical and modern canids to explore that question.
Our findings support that red wolves reflect an indigenous canid, distinct from the grey wolf and more closely related to the coyote.

In the genes of the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse, scientists have found evidence of SF Estuary’s ancient expansions & contractions. Mice populations shift with sea level rise, but now development hinders their adaptation. @cmaylward @MarkJStatham1 buff.ly/3Sk4lQ0

Will SF Bay’s marshes survive the rising waters? In our latest issue, scientists experiment with strategically placing sediment to help replenish drowning marshes and use genetics to better understand how sea level rise impacts endangered marsh mice. conta.cc/3NRGLYo

New Open Access Paper! (link.springer.com/article/10…) We examined the evolutionary and demographic history of @TheSaltyMouse using whole mitochondrial genomes. We correlated divergence events with changes in predicted marsh distribution over the past 10,000 years. 1/

Perks of working alongside Wildlife Detection Dogs for endangered Sierra Nevada red fox surveys?
✔️We have the cutest, kindest, most hard working cowoofers.👇🏽
🥶Downsides? Packing up camp at 11,000 ft! Brr, right Filson?!

New paper alert! (link.springer.com/article/10…) We used non-invasive genetic surveys to test effects of patch size and connectivity on occupancy probabilities of salt marsh harvest mice @TheSaltyMouse throughout their range in the San Francisco Estuary. 1/

Meet the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse! "Salties" are an Endangered Species found only in the salt marshes of the San Francisco Bay Area. They can survive drinking only salt water and they are star aquatic athletes capable of swimming non-stop for several hours!

Out now in Journal of Mammalogy! We developed a new non-invasive genetic survey technique for small mammals (doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyac…). Our technique focused on 5 rodent species in the SF Bay Area and is easily adapted to other small mammal systems. 1/

Our paper out today in @Trends_Ecol_Evo discusses the role of behavior in urban evolution. I've worked on this with @naturalist_20, @cschell_canids, @MaxRLambert, & Andy Sih for ~2 years and am thrilled to finally share it!

The MECU will miss you, Lauren!
After a formative and exciting journey at UC Davis, I've finished my PhD! I gave my exit seminar today, and moving to Denmark on Sunday to start my postdoc at University of Copenhagen! #PhDone ✅
Congratulations to Cody @cmaylward. The first of several diet #metabarcoding papers in the pipeline @theMECU lab.
Our paper using DNA metabarcoding to describe the diet of @TheSaltyMouse and sympatric competitors is out now (Open Access) in @Ecol_Evol. doi.org/10.1002/ece3.9121 Details below… 1/

Island spotted skunk numbers have declined, influenced by interference competition with island foxes. Our new paper finds that skunks are making fine-scale adjustments in space and time to avoid foxes: doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyab…

It's been a minute, so here's some more #coyote content! This fella lives on a golf course in #SanFrancisco. Golf courses are a unique type of urban green space, offering cover, prey, and refuge from domestic dogs. Currently, every golf course in SF is used by coyotes⛳️
