Franco-Turkish cooperation is expanding, but their disagreements have not disappeared. The South Caucasus, where Paris and Ankara have close ties to Armenia and Azerbaijan, will be one test of whether they can keep regional disputes from hindering cooperation. Ali Mammadov offers his insight in #TURKEYSource: atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/tu…

Staggering that Rubio has no clue on Ukraine.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Raj Chengappa of India Today: “That war is about Donbas.  It’s about one region of the country.  It’s – at its core, it’s about 11 percent of one part of that country that RUSSIA WANTS and CANNOT TAKE MILITARILY and that Ukraine is unwilling to give up.  And THEY HAVE GOOD REASONS why they don’t want to do that – for sovereignty and their own security long term.” - cannot take militarily is an assessment from the US NSA not to be missed. Yet, this war isn’t about Donbas it’s about existence of the entirety of Ukraine as an independent nation. state.gov/releases/office-of…

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev: Double standards also exist when someone tries to lecture you about your way of life. Before doing that, you should look in the mirror. You should ask yourself whether you have the right to lecture anyone. An independent country should not be lectured about how to live, what to do, or what not to do. We know what we are doing.

That is what happens to a country run by a man who is afraid to go to prison and is willing to do anything to avoid it. @netanyahu
Netanyahu's Israel as super Sparta is creating a self-fulfilling future. A faux self-sufficiency driven by a state tethered to Jewish supremacy; perpetual conflict; Arabs as eternal enemies; international isolation; and peace as dangerous illusion. haaretz.com/israel-news/elec…

Astonishingly, #Baku has not one but TWO splendid railway stations, back to back and both abandoned in favour of a modern station that, alas, offers few rail possibilities at the moment.

🇦🇿🇹🇷 “One nation, two states.” Was there a school headscarf clause we missed? Shared Oghuz roots. Centuries of history. Standing together through wars and disasters. Yet some of our Turkish friends are ready to trash Azerbaijan overnight over Azerbaijan’s domestic school policy? Do you stop calling your brother family because he decided not to cover his kids' hair to school? Since when did religious conformity become more important than the ethnicity, blood and history that bind us? Disagree with a policy. Debate it. But if your brotherhood collapses over a headscarf, how deep was it to begin with?

AGİT’te Kıbrıs gerginliği: Türk vekil Ali Öztunç, Rum vekillere haddini bildirdi Andorra’da 7-9 Ekim’de toplanan AGİT Parlamenter Asamblesi’nde Kıbrıs meselesi gerginlik yarattı. Güney Kıbrıs Rum Yönetimi parlamenterleri Türkiye’yi adada sözde “işgal” ile suçlayınca söz alan CHP Kahramanmaraş Milletvekili Ali Öztunç, iddiaları reddederek 1974 öncesi yaşananları hatırlattı. Öztunç, oturum boyunca Türk askerinin adada barış amacıyla bulunduğunu, harekât öncesinde Kıbrıs Türklerine yönelik katliamların sürdüğünü ve çocuklar ile sivillerin hedef alındığını söyledi. Çözüm iradesinin Türkiye tarafında olduğunu belirten vekil, 2004’te Annan Planı’na “evet” diyenin Türk tarafı, “hayır” diyenin Rum tarafı olduğunu hatırlattı; “Biz masayı kuralım diyoruz, siz masayı yıkıyorsunuz” dedi. Konuşmasını uluslararası çifte standart eleştirisiyle genişleten Öztunç, Ukrayna ve Filistin dosyalarındaki tutum farkına işaret etti. Rum basınına “gerilim” olarak yansıyan oturum, Türk heyetinin Rumlara tarihsel argümanlarla ders vermesiyle gündem oldu.

Greek South Cyprus would rather stay in the dark and spend billions laying underwater cables to Europe via Greece than accept electricity from Turkey. Just like their past motto: "We'd rather die of thirst than take water from Turks." Pure ideological blindness. #Cyprus #Energy #Geopolitics

Daily reminder! Greece's coastline length in the Eastern Mediterranean is only 167 km! For this reason, Greece has no Continental Shelf or EEZ in the Eastern Mediterranean (excluding the Ionian and Aegean)!

TURKEY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION 2034 🇹🇷🇪🇺 My proposal is clear: Turkey should have a European future — but on clear conditions. First: NATO enlargement. Turkey should support NATO membership for the Republic of Cyprus, Israel and Lebanon and back a NATO perspective for Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Second: the Euro. Turkey should prepare for adoption of the Euro and full integration into Europe’s economic architecture. Third: visa liberalisation and wider mobility, including closer links with partners such as Mongolia. Fourth: join the free world in foreign policy. Align with the EU, participate in sanctions against Russia and support a rules-based international order. Fifth: good neighbourhood. Normalise relations with Greece and Cyprus and build constructive relations with Israel, Lebanon and all European partners. Sixth: democracy, rule of law and economic reform. Independent courts, fundamental rights, media freedom and full alignment with the EU Single Market. Turkey in the EU 2034 — on clear conditions. A stronger Turkey, a stronger Europe, a more secure region. 🇹🇷🇪🇺 #Turkey #Türkiye #EU2034 #EuropeanUnion #NATO #NATOEnlargement #Euro #Cyprus #Israel #Lebanon #Georgia #Armenia #Azerbaijan #Europe #FreeWorld

My proposal: repeat the 1952 lesson of alliance and dialogue. Greece and Türkiye joined NATO together on 18 February 1952, strengthening NATO’s southern flank and creating a common security framework between two historic rivals. Today I propose a new strategic opening: Israel and Türkiye should rebuild their relationship around security cooperation, dialogue and a shared Euro-Atlantic future. Israel in NATO would require agreement by all NATO members, but the political objective is clear: turn rivalry into structured cooperation rather than permanent confrontation. 🇮🇱🤝🇹🇷 REPEAT THE MIRACLE OF PEACE ISRAEL & TÜRKİYE IN NATO Security through cooperation. Peace through dialogue. A stronger Eastern Mediterranean. #Israel #Türkiye #Turkey #NATO #Peace #EasternMediterranean #NATOEnlargement #FehlingerDoctrine #GunterFehlinger

Erdogan on Greece - Israeli defense agreement: “The relations that Greece or any other country develops with third countries are a matter of their own choice. Türkiye does not view every bilateral relationship as a threat directed against it. Nonetheless, we closely monitor any actions that may jeopardize our national security, lawful rights, and interests. Türkiye has a strong position and influence in NATO. Rather than debating the ramifications of a hypothetical military confrontation for the Alliance, it would be more prudent to focus on diplomacy to prevent such a possibility from arising.”
Erdogan on Israel; “Recently, a misguided narrative aimed at portraying Türkiye as a new source of threat has been fueled in Israel. We consider this rhetoric to be linked to Israel’s domestic political dynamics and the electoral climate. Türkiye has no hostility toward the Israeli people or toward any other society. What we oppose are policies that we consider contrary to international law and steps that deepen instability in our region.” • In response to a question regarding a potential war between Turkey and Israel in Syria: “ Türkiye does not formulate its foreign policy around inevitable war scenarios. Our approach to Syria is clear. We also consider Israel’s attacks against Syria within this framework. Israel’s attacks, which disregard international law and established rules, are clearly undermining Syria’s sovereignty and making it more difficult to establish stability in the region. Yet stability in Syria would contribute to peace and development throughout our region, including in Israel.” — Newsweek

Regarding Turkey's "funds crisis", my reflections fall to why there are so few free-floating shares in Turkey. That, and a chance to put on the following broken record: institutions. Turkey arguably does not have the best institutions - either economic or political - in EM space. And to the extent that weak institutions translate into weak investor protection, investors should then be more prone to concentrate ownership, resulting in less free-floating shares. Second, the private benefits of control (tunneling etc) may be more acute with poor institutions, resulting in minority investors discounting the price of any free-floating shares. As such, poor institutions can easily generate an equilibrium with few free floating shares. Perhaps that is what has happened in Turkey. As far as I know, Turkey allows dual-class shares and pyramidal control structures, so owners could still maintain significant control of capital in a relatively liquid equity market (somewhat similar to Sweden's corporate governance system). So why don't we observe large-owner control and deeper equity markets in Turkey? Is it because the state prefers ownership concentration across a domestic business elite that it can control? Is it because institutionalized weak minority investor protection generates too large price discounts making blockholders unwilling to dilute? Either way, this strikes me as being related to Turkey's pervasive institutional problem. And foregoing institutional reform is to accept vulernability to the excess volatility and market shocks that will undoubtedly follow.

Nobody in Azerbaijani history called that part of Azerbaijan “East Zangezur.” The term was introduced by Aliyev immediately after the 2020 war. That invention alone showed how meaningless his rhetoric about peace was: if there is an “East Zangezur,” then logically there must also be a “West Zangezur” — and we all know where that refers to. Azerbaijani history books also teach that the whole of Zangezur is sacred Azerbaijani land. European diplomats are not so ignorant that they are unaware of this context. Yet they continue to encourage and repeat this rhetoric. So how can one believe that this kind of Europe genuinely wants peace in our region? In this respect, I see little difference between Russian and European attitudes toward the region: the same divide-and-rule approach, the same cultivation of enmity, and the same imperial logic. This does not mean that, by supporting Aliyev’s rhetoric today, Europeans are necessarily “siding with Azerbaijan.” Today they may endorse Aliyev’s irredentist rhetoric; tomorrow, with the same enthusiasm, they may support precisely the opposite position. In either case, it is local people who will suffer. And their suffering sometimes seems to be treated as an acceptable price for the interests, growth, and prosperity of those who call themselves the civilized world.
Replying to @EUSR_SCCiG
On 11-12 September, I joined for the first time a visit organised by the 🇦🇿 authorities for the diplomatic community to former conflict-affected areas in Karabakh and East Zangezur regions to get acquainted with the situation on the ground. (3/6)

In this town many argued that Turkey was itching for a military clash with Israel and Erdoğan’s own fiery rhetoric fed that narrative. But here, Turkey is doing the smart thing. It is trying to dial down tensions and giving Israel a way out by framing Israeli attacks as driven by electoral politics.

I am not happy about the Economist’s article, which feels like a hit piece. There is also a background to it, which is more troubling (as I will share at some point). I asked them to allow me to respond. I am waiting for their answer. If not in the magazine, I will share my response here.
