His attackers beat him with a metal pipe, shot him in the back, raped him and held him in a psychiatric hospital for being Ukrainian.
And when he was freed, he was afraid to wake up, because he thought he would find himself back in that torture chamber.
Marko Kaliush, 29, spent almost two years in Russian captivity. For being Ukrainian. For running pro-Ukrainian Telegram channels. For not betraying his country.
They snatched him right off the street in occupied Melitopol.
FSB officers overtook him with assault rifles, forced him face down on the ground, cuffed him and pulled a sack over his head.
Then came the commandant's office. There they tortured him with electric current and threatened him with a pistol, demanding that he sign documents.
He signed nothing. He decided: let them kill me.
But the occupiers did it all for him – and showed the face of a "Ukrainian terrorist" on Russian media.
After that came the Melitopol temporary detention facility, the Mariupol pre-trial detention center, Krasnodar, Rostov, occupied Donetsk. Batons, stun guns, handcuffs tightened until they drew blood. And humiliation: prisoners were forced to sing the Russian anthem.
And then the worst part began. Marko was sent to a psychiatric hospital in occupied Zhdanivka. Officially, for "compulsory treatment." In reality, to a new torture chamber.
There he was met by "militiamen." They kicked him in the kidneys. They tied him to a bed and beat him with a metal pipe.
And then came what he can barely speak about: sexual violence.
He remembers the names of everyone who tortured him. Every one of them.
Rescue came on August 24, 2025. He was told he was going home. They blindfolded him, cuffed him, drove him through Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Belarus.
He did not know where they were taking him. He thought: back to Crimea, back to the torture chamber.
And then – freedom.
The first thing he felt was not joy. It was fear. He thought it was a dream. That any moment he would wake up and be back in that psych ward.
Marko says one thing: this is his native Ukraine. He was born here. He loves this country. And he has always hated the "ruzzians."
Two years of hell. Electric current. A pipe. A psychiatric hospital. And not a single signature.
