$QUBIC Hack: How the Network Saved 87% of Stolen Funds
On the night of October 17 to 18, an attacker emptied 1,404 Qubic wallets, or 2,940 billion QU. The response followed within hours: the Computors stopped the network, freezing 87.1% of the stolen funds on site, and @MEXC blocked in about an hour the account that had received the rest. Twelve days later, the network is running again, 293 billion QU have returned from the exchange to the chain, and the first verified owners have been reimbursed. The flaw did not come from the protocol but from seed generation on certain Apple devices, and it also concerns intact wallets.

El pasado 29 de octubre, en Múnich (Alemania), Roman Thommen, conocido como J0ET0M (@Qubic_JOETOM), CTO (director de tecnología) de Qubic, participó como orador principal en la TUM Blockchain Conference 26, uno de los encuentros internacionales dedicados a blockchain, criptografía y nuevas tecnologías.
Su presentación tuvo lugar en el escenario Turing y llevó un título que resume una de las grandes apuestas tecnológicas de @_Qubic_ :
«Useful Proof of Work in Production: What Happens When Mining Has to Learn?»
¿Qué significa realmente esta propuesta?
Durante años, la minería tradicional de las criptomonedas ha utilizado potencia computacional para resolver problemas matemáticos cuyo resultado sirve principalmente para asegurar la red. Qubic plantea un enfoque diferente: aprovechar esa capacidad de procesamiento para realizar trabajo computacional con una utilidad adicional.
A través de su modelo de Useful Proof of Work (uPoW), los mineros no se limitan a competir por resolver hashes. Ejecutan tareas computacionales relacionadas con el entrenamiento y la optimización de redes neuronales artificiales.
Pero llevar esta idea a producción implica resolver desafíos técnicos importantes.
En su presentación, Roman abordó tres cuestiones fundamentales:
🔹 Verificabilidad: las tareas deben poder comprobarse rápidamente, sin que verificar un resultado requiera repetir todo el trabajo realizado.
🔹 Consenso: los resultados deben ser aceptados y reconocidos por las máquinas que participan en la red, manteniendo la coordinación y la confiabilidad del sistema.
🔹 Problemas abiertos: ¿cómo se organiza una red cuando los mineros deben trabajar sobre problemas cuyas soluciones no se conocen de antemano?
Y hay otro aspecto fundamental: qué sucede cuando los mineros reales compiten entre sí, con incentivos económicos reales. No alcanza con que un algoritmo funcione en condiciones controladas; debe demostrar que puede operar bajo las exigencias de una red en producción.
La exposición también puso sobre la mesa las preguntas que todavía debe responder toda la industria que busca transformar la minería tradicional.
¿Por qué es importante esta presentación?
Porque Qubic está llevando una discusión que va más allá de la velocidad de procesamiento o la capacidad de una blockchain.
La propuesta es cambiar el propósito de la potencia computacional: que los recursos utilizados para mantener una red también puedan contribuir a resolver problemas de computación útiles, incluyendo el desarrollo de inteligencia artificial.
No se trata solamente de imaginar una minería diferente, sino de enfrentar los desafíos de implementarla, verificarla y hacerla funcionar a escala.
