We discovered a new immune signaling molecule: N7-cADPR N7-cADPR is produced by phage-stimulated TIR proteins. It activates a bacterial caspase, which then degrades essential proteins to curb infection Preprint: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… Congrats @FrancoisRousset & @IlyaOsterman

On the cover: mechanism of bacterial antiphage systems encoding reverse transcriptases , a beautiful exception to the central dogma. Congrats to the authors for these 2 wonderful studies. Much more incredible molecular biology to uncover in the hundreds of antiphage systems!
The central dogma of molecular biology states that genetic information flows from DNA and RNA to protein, with reverse transcription converting RNA to DNA. In the pursuit of understanding how bacteria defend themselves from viral infection, two groups have found alternative pathways to making genes from RNA that did not previously encode proteins. Our NAD-reconstitution story is finally published in @nature rdcu.be/dU5AQ Thank you to all co-authors, especially to @hadarsamra, @FrancoisRousset, Elena Loseva, @ErezTzvi, @AdiMillman, and everybody in the @SorekLab for their help and support.
"Little pigeons can carry great messages🕊️" Phages produce NAD+ by one-step reactions from nicotinamide (all other organisms need at least two) and protect themselves against multiple bacterial immune systems. Check out our new preprint - biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… A thread below⬇️

Incredible story highlighting the biochemical innovations hiding in phages genomes and revealed by the study of phage-bacteria interactions.
Our paper out today @nature: phages reconstitute NAD+ to counter bacterial immunity Phaged invented a new biochemical pathway for NAD+ synthesis - including previously unknown enzymatic reactions - to evade bacterial defenses Congrats @IlyaOsterman! nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
