My paternal grandmother's atheist grandparents were Dutch urbanites from the Randstad. That was probably one of the most irreligious demographics in the world in the late 19th century.
My mum's parents had some book-Protestant beliefs, especially her dad who would say grace at the table. My dad's dad was baptised Catholic and became disillusioned with the faith as a young adult. My dad's mum OTOH was raised an atheist and even *her* grandparents were atheists!

The idea of someone with atheist grandparents is one of the most terrifying things I can imagine.

In Minionesia, Halloween is incorporated into the wider Christmas season; the first week of November is typically referred to as 'Christmasween', with many shops offering promotions in this period.

American nationalism now consists of intense debates of why Europeans are imagined as being rude to them while maintaining an omertà on why they cannot walk around large parts of their cities.

There are around 150 Sikhs in the British armed forces versus the several hundred British Sikhs that joined the international arms of Sikh militant organisations that funded/orchestrated acts of terrorism in the west & India. You are fantasising about people that don’t exist
The hardline ethno-obsessives would repatriate these young lads to God-knows-where. I think we should embrace and applaud them. (And, thankfully, I think most British people would agree.)

re-reading gideon lewis-kraus’s feature story “sand castles” on @NewYorker. so many great details. the AI supply chain becomes a breathing, moving, growing beast, something so visceral and material. one detail i can’t stop thinking is: one in forty-six babies in taiwan is born to a tsmc employee (?!?!) next year’s goal: convince a magazine or foundation to fund my tsmc tradwife story. link: Computer Chips Are the Most Magnificent Things Humanity Has Ever Made newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

One issue with the X algorithm now is that it rewards posters who mindlessly reply to every comment on their original post, often with no value added at all.

Controlling for income, I bet you'd find that the White population living in Canary Wharf is considerably skewed towards Other Whites rather than Britons. Put another way, 'young professional' Britons are more likely to find CW 'sterile' etc than their continental equivalents.

It's a bit more complicated than this. In Britain, Bangladeshis have very high rates of social housing, and are highly concentrated in one borough of London (Tower Hamlets), which has experienced considerable white flight of the native working class, to the extent that they represent a large % of 'the poor' in east-central London. Pakistanis by contrast are much less geographically concentrated, they are more dispersed across the midlands and north of England, and more willing and able to scrape together money for private housing (which is cheaper up there). Amongst other things, Indian women are more likely to work than Muslim subcons, which means Indian households are more likely to go above the relevant income eligibility thresholds for social housing. One reason why blacks are able to get better access to social housing is because they have much higher rates of bastardy, and single motherhood is a pretty dependable way to go up the priority list for social housing.
Replying to @cornu__copia
South Asians, for example, despite often considered cunning and able to use any loopholes in their advantage are not able to infiltrate the social housing market in elite neighborhoods like recent African migrants.

I've slept to white noise for years and years now. I have tried a couple of dedicated white noise machines, but what's funny is that these machines give me auditory hallucinations, while the generic 3 hour Spotify track I play from my phone doesn't. It's very hard to describe the hallucinations, but basically consider your brain needs to make sense of what white noise is, which is not a natural sound and is basically an undifferentiated SHSHSH. The brain then tries to fill in the sound with loops of other sounds, which are themselves made up. It could be a ringing sound, or a repeated short word, or a snippet of a melody, or something like that. Even when I focus on the hallucination and try to will it to go away, it doesn't! That's the craziest. And they'll change from night to night so it's nothing to do with the machine, it's a proper hallucination, I just otherwise have access to my full mental faculties to know it's not real.

Britain is a very irreligious society already, and so like fish in water, we don't really appreciate that in most societies in the world, the irreligious are on average more 'moral' people than the religious. I mean this in the basic sense that the irreligious are personally more ethical people in terms of doing things like honouring their word, having greater capacity for empathy and sympathy, as well as being generally more intelligent and diligent people who are capable of controlling their emotions, trying to use logical argument, patiently listening and not descending into shouting and hectoring and so on. If you were able to look into things like the religious profile of men who beat women, children, and animals, I guarantee that there would be a definite religious skew to such people. There are obviously exceptions, and through the vehicle of religion clearly the 'thinking' religious person can be virtuous, both at the higher and lower strata of society. I personally have a friend who was a drug addict and turned his life around through faith, and I can't fault that. But nonetheless, it remains a PR issue for religion the world over that the religious are just generally, on average, shittier, nastier people than the non-religious.
