Thank you to the principals who lead with empathy every day. Your leadership lays the foundation for student and staff wellbeing.
Research shows that when empathy is nurtured in schools, aggression and bullying go down and stay down, while prosocial behaviours go up and stay up.
Empathy doesn’t grow in isolation—it grows in environments where it’s seen, supported, and valued. Empathy is a principal’s most powerful attribute.
At Roots of Empathy, we’ve seen how principals who prioritize emotional literacy help create school cultures where students thrive—not just academically, but emotionally.

Emotional regulation is more than simply “keeping our cool.” It’s about understanding our triggers, recognizing stress, and finding ways to respond rather than react. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…

Integrating self-assessment into daily schoolwork supports academic growth by helping students reflect on their work and recognize areas for improvement.
When young girls in Roots of Empathy (ROE) classrooms grow up knowing their voices matter, they lead with purpose, confidence, and empathy.
Emotional literacy is foundational for a future where every girl is seen, heard, and valued. By nurturing empathy from the start, ROE helps shape a world where girls grow into women whose leadership, resilience, and contributions are recognized and celebrated every day.
An inclusive world begins with valuing and uplifting the voices of all women—starting in childhood. 💚
Happy Women’s Day!

What really drives motivation? Self-Determination Theory points to three key psychological needs:
✔️ Competence – Feeling capable and effective.
✔️ Autonomy – Having control over your work and choices.
✔️ Relatedness – Feeling connected to others.
When these needs are met, we’re more motivated, productive, and happy.

Research tells us that when students are taught social-emotional skills their academic performance noticeably improves. That’s why the first principle of the Responsive Classroom approach is “Teaching social and emotional skills is just as important as teaching academic content."

Teachers and school staff do more than educate—they inspire, support, and help shape the future. 💚
This Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, we recognize the educators who go beyond academics—who listen, encourage, and inspire young minds to grow into caring individuals. Your work makes a difference in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.

In Roots of Empathy, children become emotionally literate as they are coached to understand the baby’s emotions, their own emotions, and the emotions of others. Being able to feel the emotions of another is empathy.
Empathy creates a foundation for wellbeing and positive relationships. When we experience positive connections and feel truly supported, we build the strength to navigate life’s challenges and grow through adversity.
🟢 83% of ROE students reported that they would try to help someone who feels sad, scared, or lonely.

Important study by @MGHPsychiatry colleague @royperlis on association between social media use & irritability. Correlation does not = causation, but we need to make sure we are talking to our kids (& ourselves) about risks of excessive social media use buff.ly/40rhGKr

Our brains don’t run at full speed all day long—they follow a daily rhythm: Peak, Trough, Recovery.
Larks (15% of us) and the middle majority (two-thirds) experience peak focus in the morning, a midday dip, and a late-afternoon boost.
Owls (20%) peak later in the day, following a recovery-trough-peak cycle.
Your optimal schedule isn't about copying someone else's rhythm - it's about matching your tasks to your chronotype's natural peaks.
