BANNED BOOKS WEEK is a time for us to step up, engage in conversations, and find ways to stand up and speak out against censorship and book bans.
I was fortunate enough to welcome back NYT bestselling author @SteveSheinkin to my show, and we touched on some important issues surrounding book banning and censorship.
I’ll be sharing the full interview on October 10th, so be sure to check it out on my YouTube channel.
Kids not only need to see themselves in the stories they read, but they also deserve to learn about the true stories that have shaped the world we live in. History teaches us what to do, and what not to do. It helps us understand the mistakes of past generations while giving us a roadmap for navigating the future.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me Steve!

John Boyne and the Polari Prize
In August 2025, after John Boyne's novella Earth in the longlist was challenged because of his belief that biological sex is real, Polari Prize, a prominent award for LGBTQIA+ authors ended up cancelling the prize for 2025 rather than take the risk of it winning. The Elements, a novel composed of four novellas including Earth, later won the Prix du Roman Fnac. It also subsequently won the Prix Femina Étranger, one of the most prestigious literary awards in Europe, and he was shortlisted for Author of the Year at the Irish Book Awards.

Jo Bartosch and Rob Jessel and Stroud Brewery
In March 2026 Jo Bartosch and Rob Jessel, authors of Pornocracy, had a lecture at Stroud Brewery cancelled because transactivists objected to the fact that they had given an interview to SEEN in Publishing, amongst other things. This interview was provided as evidence that Bartosch’s and Jessel’s lawful beliefs would damage Stroud Brewery’s reputation and endanger staff. The complaint was not about the book, but rather about the presence of authors they disagree with giving a ticketed lecture in a public-hire room. The activists’ successful suppression of the lecture was reported on by the BBC, among other outlets. @jo_bartosch @robjessel16 @BannedWeekUK

Books are not the only things being challenged. So are the stories and identities they carry.
For #BannedBooksWeek, @XtraMagazine has launched Comics Against Censorship, a five-part series on LGBTQ2S+ stories, censorship and the freedom to read.
