We study +30k subsidy initiatives:
• Subsidies boost entry of less productive firms
• Unconditional subsidies drive the negative effects
• Targeting intl. firms, SMEs & green/automation improve entrant quality

Can higher productivity also mean cleaner production?
Our new paper in Energy Economics finds that more productive firms cause less emissions per unit of output, but also more emissions per unit of input: smart regulation is key!

Following the introduction of the #EU Emissions Trading System, the share of dirty inputs sourced from non-participating countries has increased significantly, consistent with #carbon leakage.

🆕 LISER study on #digitaltransformation during the #COVID19 pandemic
📖 The publication entitled "Firm-Level Technology Adoption in Times of Crisis" co-authored by LISER researcher Terry Gregory, investigates how crises affect firms’ adoption of frontier technologies using the Covid-19 #pandemic as a #casestudy. The analysis tracks the nature, timing, and pandemic-related motivations of investments among German firms, using longitudinal survey data linked with administrative worker–firm records.
🔍 The authors find clear evidence for a shift toward #remotework technologies that helped firms mitigate negative employment effects. Overall, however, the pandemic slowed down the diffusion of new #technologies. This procyclical pattern of technology adoption is particularly striking since the pandemic created strong incentives to experiment with new technologies.

Just accepted in JEBO "Dissecting Environmental Efficiency: The Role of Technology Adoption and Usage". Results: 80% of EU firms use environmentally inefficient technologies and diffusing frontier technologies would reduce CO2 by 60% output being equal
