My views on Covid, restrictions, masks, testing and the role governments play has changed wildly in the past 2 years. Has anyone not changed their positions on most Covid related things since Jan 20? I was pro lockdown, pro mask, pro governments stepping in, etc. Now I'm not.

I think people are severely downplaying how over Trump a lot of people are. This could be a shocking election
RACE RATING CHANGE: Iowa Governor Lean D → Likely D Rob Sand currently has an 81% chance of winning. Our model puts his projected margin at more than 7 points.

Trump: "You need to be a student at the top of your class at MIT to turn on a lawnmower nowadays, you know? But I got rid of all that stuff. Now you can have a lawnmower."

Hi, expert in virology here (I used to play Plague Inc.) The silver lining to this grim news is that when a pathogen is extremely deadly, it's actually less likely to become a pandemic since there's less opportunity for it to spread amongst the population
The Pneumonic Plague that just escaped a lab in Russia is about 100x deadlier than COVID

Holy shit. Remember after his stroke, when I told you Trump’s blood results only make sense if he is in an additional medication? Trump claims he takes a “386” of Aspirin. Which doesn’t exist. But is the marking on hypertension medication. People tried to claim he meant he takes a 325mg of aspirin daily - which is the level for severe pain treatment. But his own health records confirm he is only on a 81mg dose.
Trump: "I take an aspirin a day. I don't know if it works but psychologically I need it. It thins the hell out of your blood I guess. I don't know if it works or not but I've been doing it for a long time. And here I am making speeches. I like Bayer aspirin. And I take the big one. They want me to go down to the 80. I take the 386. I don't know what the hell it is. It's a monster. They said, 'Sir, you don't need that!' I said, do me a favor, I've been doing okay for 35 years. Leave me alone."

If electricity is so great, why does it only turn on a lightbulb. Ordinary people don't need fake light.
If AI is so great than how come it’s not cured cancer? If it’s so great then how come it’s not helping regular people’s lives? Solving crisis in our society and shit like that? I feel you guys are overselling it.

Anti progress, anti technology, anti AI people like this hurt their cause more than anyone else. The average white collar worker spends dozens of hours a week dealing with email, websites, researching, etc. Saving even part of that time is huge. It's been amazing for me.
I’m a competent adult. Why do I need an “AI agent” to check into a flight for me? I’m literate. Why do I need an “AI agent” to read and write emails for me? Also, I don’t get so many emails that I can’t answer them myself. The reason “no one uses AI” is that there’s no serious utility here for the vast majority of people.

This is a perfect argument for why we need better AI and better adoption. Not the opposite.
AI for 99% of people is just three things: 1. Cheating on homework 2. Search engine 3. Slop That's it. The programmers live in a different universe where AI is integrated into literally every part of their lives. To everyone else it just made everything suck.

How does making employees grumpy & sore improve the amiability of my experience?
TSA says it is removing chairs at document checks in airports, requiring staff to stand for their shift. TSA explained the reason as twofold: to ensure its employees meet its fitness standards and to create an amiable environment for travelers. wapo.st/4AIo7ZJ

If Democrats win we can investigate Trump. That's worth way more than 5k that won't happen.
If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America, $5,000! Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This repeats a promise Trump made in September 2026. The US has approximately 250 million adult citizens so the total cost would be over 1.25 trillion dollars. Congress must approve any such federal spending. nytimes.com/2026/09/10/us/… pbs.org/newshour/polit…

So they're arguing trump is so old and in such terrible health he might die if his party loses...
BREAKING: White House lawyers are warning that if a blue wave occurs in the midterms, the stress of being investigated, impeached, and turned into a lame duck on the global stage could give Donald Trump a heart attack or stroke.

Why does change terrify so many people? There were a fair amount terrified of 5G. There's a fair amoung terrified by MRNA vaccines. Now it's AI.
I am only 24 and I have spent 3 1/2 years terrified that ASI will cause extinction. I will likely be dead before 30. At times I have felt unlucky. But the ones who are truly unfortunate are those who have had even less time to live. I sometimes get sad looking at a stroller.

Oh this is an easy one: The Democrats weren’t trying to overturn an election. Hope you found this explanation helpful.
Look at Jack Smith’s list. There is one thing that is consistent: every name on it is a Republican. Is it a crime to be a Republican? Is it a crime to write a check to Republicans? No. Jack Smith used his investigation as an excuse to engage in a massive fishing expedition to target Republicans.

The fundamental tension w AI and education is that I think schools ought to (a) teach people how to think and (b) prepare them for the workforce (or, at the very least, not actively harm their employability). Those goals push in opposite directions. AI interferes with thinking but it’s also baked into the work of software, finance, legal, marketing, etc. If you use too much AI in college, you’ll be dumb; never use it for four years, and you’ll be in a disadvantaged position for the most popular high-paying entry level jobs. Something like this below seems like at least a thoughtful way of addressing that tension.
🧵UChicago is leading the way on AI in higher education. 1. All students will take an analog writing class. 2. Core classes in the humanities and social sciences will prohibit technology in class. 3. A new requirement in computational thinking will likely be added to the core.

Using statistics to mislead people doesn't get more blatant than this tweet. This equates to hundreds of thousands fewer hospitalizations and severe illnesses. But he can minimize that to sound insignificant. Like a death rate of only 1% pop wid. That could be 100m deaths.
The absolute risk reduction for the flu vaccine for symptomatic infection is about 1%-1.5%. The ARR for serious illness is 0.05%-0.20%. Lower for healthy adults, in the range of 0.02-0.03%. So are these institutions that push flu vaccines on everyone bad at math, bad at science, or both?
