Hans Egede, a Norwegian Lutheran pastor who sailed to Greenland in 1721 to find lost Norse Christian settlers, only to discover they had vanished and instead encountered the Inuit (Kalaallit) people...
. . .
A Norwegian pastor sailed for Greenland to find a Christian people that Europe had lost track of three centuries before.
The last written word of the Norse Greenlanders was a wedding at Hvalsey Church in September 1408, recorded in letters from a priest and several Icelanders.
After that the settlements fell silent.
Hans Egede, a young pastor in northern Norway, was sure their descendants were still out there, either holding to the old Catholic faith or lost to Christianity altogether, and from 1711 he petitioned for royal permission to go find them.
He was thirty-five when the king finally agreed.
His wife, Gertrud Rask, was thirteen years older than he was, and she went with him.
The ship Haabet, meaning The Hope, left Bergen on May 2, 1721, with two smaller vessels carrying the couple, their four children and about forty colonists.
They landed on July 3 and built their station on an island at the mouth of a long fjord, which Egede named the Island of Hope.
For months he searched for the Norse.
He found only the Kalaallit, the Inuit people of that coast.
So he set out to learn their language, and a story is told that his first try at the Lord's Prayer turned daily bread into a word meaning how delicious.
Then winter came, and scurvy spread through the colony.
Most of the colonists went home at the first chance.
Egede stayed, with his family and a few others.
In 1728 a royal expedition moved the colony to the mainland and built a fort called Godthรฅb, which grew into Nuuk, the capital of Greenland today.
The king had backed the mission partly to reassert an old colonial claim, and it became the foundation of Danish rule over the island.
In 1733 a returning ship brought smallpox, and the next year the epidemic spread through the Inuit communities near the colony.
Gertrud Egede died of it in 1735.
In 1736 Egede took her body back to Denmark for burial and left their son Poul in charge of the mission.
He never found a single descendant of the Norse settlers he had come to save.
His statue still stands in Nuuk, and in 2020 it was vandalized.

October 19, 202 BC. Zama, in North Africa. Hannibal finally loses.
For sixteen years Hannibal had haunted Rome. He crossed the Alps with elephants, crushed army after army, and won at Cannae the most perfect victory of the ancient world. But Rome refused to give up. So a young general named Publius Cornelius Scipio took the war to Africa, straight at Carthage itself. Hannibal was called home to save his city.
Before the battle, the two commanders reportedly met face to face between the armies. Hannibal offered peace. Scipio turned him down.
Hannibal opened with 80 war elephants. Scipio had prepared for them. He lined up his legions with open lanes between the units. When the elephants charged, Roman trumpets blared, the animals panicked, and many either stampeded harmlessly down the lanes or turned back into the Carthaginian ranks.
Then the infantry met in a brutal grinding fight. Hannibal held his best men, the veterans who had followed him through Italy, in reserve for the end. It was nearly enough.
But Scipio's cavalry, led by the Numidian king Masinissa, who had switched sides to Rome, had chased the Carthaginian horsemen off the field. They came back just in time and slammed into Hannibal's veterans from behind.
Carthage surrendered. It gave up its fleet, paid a fortune in silver, and could never again wage war without Rome's permission. Scipio earned a new name: Africanus.

Evil detests beauty because beauty is proof of a transcendental order, of objective Goodness and Truth.
To attack beauty is to wage war against the possibility of transcendence.
Beauty is a great affront to nihilism. It testifies to that which is greater than the individual, because to create a beautiful thing is to acknowledge that you are answerable to standards higher than your own. Beauty is often called a great evangelist for this reason.
This is why they outright destroy beauty or try to subvert your perception of it by promoting ugliness or triviality. Beauty is neither neutral nor trivial โ your ability to discern the beautiful from the ugly is intimately connected to your capacity to recognize the divine.
Dietrich von Hildebrand once declared that "beauty is the archenemy of mediocrity." Why?
Beauty elevates a person toward truth, goodness, and the divine. The antitheses to beauty drag the soul down into nihilism and worship of the self.

๐จ#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting in Georgia after a White Kroger manager who ran into the parking lot to protect an ELDERLY co-worker from MASKED Black shoplifters was BEATEN, left with a CONCUSSION and STAPLES...
...and then FIRED by Kroger 3 DAYS LATER for helping her!!!
After 14 YEARS WORKING THERE!!!!!!
Yes, you read that right.
Sixteen months later, the men who put him in the hospital have never been arrested.
Not one.
His name is Michael Self.
For 14 years, he ran the Kroger on North Decatur Road in DeKalb County.
On the morning of Saturday, May 24th, 2025, around 8:20 a.m., masked shoplifters walked out of his store.
An elderly employee followed them outside.
Cellphone video shows what happened next. The masked suspects swung a bag of paper towels at her.
Then they SHOVED her.
Michael ran out to help her.
"I literally just wanted to draw the tension away from my associates, get them to stop and everybody just be done," he said.
"As I got away from that door, someone hit me in the back of the head with something."
The video shows him on the ground.
He left Emory University Hospital with a concussion and staples in his head.
AND IT GETS WORSE.
Three days later, Kroger fired him.
Yes, after fourteen years a father of three was TERMINATED FROM HIS JOB for trying to protect an elderly woman.
The reason?
"He violated the company's shoplifting policy."
The termination letter, Michael says, accused HIM of starting the fight.
"I didn't even get to talk to the people that decided to fire me," he said.
So the rule is: watch the elderly cashier get shoved in the parking lot.
Do nothing to help her.
Keep your job.
Step in? You're the problem and you're fired
OH, and the Black men in the masks?
DeKalb County police say the case is "still open."
No names.
No descriptions.
No arrests.
AFTER 16 months.
They beat an old woman, cracked a man's skull open, and walked away with paper towels and their freedom.
The only person who has faced any consequence for what happened in that parking lot is the man who tried to stop it.
Michael is finally telling his side of the story because he is still fighting to clear his name and still looking for work.
WE DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS!!!!!!!
