Couturier: “At times this year, we’re soft, I would say. Not hard on battles. Lose battles easily. It’s one thing to make mistakes and not win a battle, but if you’re in there trying hard and stuff, that’s different. We definitely need to pick up our physicality. It goes into competing as well, I think.”

Flyers rookie Oliver Bonk played 13:31 against Nathan MacKinnon at 5-on-5 last night, and in those minutes, the Flyers out-scored the Avs 1-0 and out-chanced the Avs 7-6. No, really! thehockeynews.com/nhl/philad…

Postponing my David Jiricek story to tomorrow, because the latest Flyers roster move is a precursor to something else, right? The possibilities are interesting thehockeynews.com/nhl/philad…

Asked Martone about his communication with Michkov off the ice. Good stuff here: “Honestly, this past couple weeks I think we’ve gotten a lot closer. I think for him, English isn’t his first language, so I think for me to go out of my way and start those conversations — ask him about his family, as him about his brother. I think that just builds chemistry on the ice. He’s been awesome this year. Definitely speaking more English, being more vocal in the room. It’s awesome to see. For us, we’re 19 and 21 in this league. We’ve got a long ways to go. I think we can be a good duo in this league for a long time.”

Of note: @jasonmyrt spoke to the Flyers this morning before their pregame skate. Travis Sanheim: "The battle that he's going through, and the fight, we're here for him as a group and as an organization. And I think his message is just doing it together as a team and buying in and doing it in numbers. If we do that, we like our chances as a group, and we like the team that we have. "So, just using that as motivation and understanding the fight that he's in. He doesn't quit, and he's battling, and it was a good message this morning."

In just one week, the Flyers' fourth line has been at the scene of the crime for three game-winning goals, while Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone are closer to Noel Acciari than Owen Tippett in ice time. That's a major, major issue thehockeynews.com/nhl/philad…

Michael Bunting should never get more PP TOI in a game than Matvei Michkov. Cannot justify that. Many, many things to pick apart -- the Flyers play dumb and reactive hockey, for one -- but that jumps off the page on a team that can't buy a goal.

So the Flyers lost again. But wait. It gets better. The last team to start an NHL regular season 1-7-0 through their first eight games and still make the playoffs was the 2013–14 Philadelphia Flyers.

Flyers fans in the building are trying, man. Flyers have a couple consecutive shifts in the offensive zone and the building comes to life, as they try to will this team to a goal. It didn't work, but I really didn't think they'd have any energy left. Clearly they still care.
