ICYMI: @InRO launched a podcast today! In Review On Mic is now available on our Substack or wherever else you get your podcasts. Listen to our debut episode (about some of our writers' favorite debut films) here: api.omarshehata.me/substack-…
Book proposal research going well (watched two films, scribbled incoherent notes, come up with about seven different variations on essentially the same subject, bookmarked some articles)
Btw, any academics want to give me their JSTOR login info? 🥺🥺

When it debuted in 1989, E. Elias Merhige’s Begotten fascinated and shocked those who witnessed it. Never before had the screen depicted such a primal, existential drama, and it became one of the must-see films of the 1990s. The intervening decades have not diminished the power of this unique motion picture experience. This new 4K restoration reveals the full photographic body of Begotten, preserving its otherworldly organic texture and retaining its visceral impact, a previously unknown life form captured in cinematic amber.
Restoration personally supervised by filmmaker E. Elias Merhige. Restored from the original 16mm negative and optical soundtrack. It was scanned and restored in 4K, and final grading was performed at filmscan & more in Munich, Germany.

Well, as I said, I've never felt compelled to hunt them down. There were a whole host of "sensitive, woman's stories" being told in the late '60's/early '70s, to my mind purely reflective of a forgotten cultural moment. (The most important takeway IMO is that Neil Young met a wife that way.)
A lot of Cassavetes looks to fall into the same bag for me, hence my lack of interest.
