They let me loose on the CIPD podcast!
Thanks to Lisa for hosting a chat where I reflect on the challenges we face as a profession - but also why the answers to many organisational performance and productivity now flow through people professionals getting things right. (1/3)
Have a word @IanMurrayMP…
Andrew’s work in support of the Governance of @RECmembers was tireless - especially in the restructuring of governance we did during the pandemic. A huge support to me and three difference @RECPress Chairs.
Really good tonight. Should have won, and unlucky not to. Need to take our chances because, like the other lot, they will get all the leniency in the world from officials.
Here's our response to today's #Budget2026 for the people profession in the UK - better words around employers, but more practical action needed.

Great to hear CX open with "for British businesses" and "for working people". Let's see if he delivers... #Budget2026
We are so lucky to have this lad. The attitude is worth so much.

Delighted to represent @CIPD at today’s @GOVUK conference on tackling antisemitism with @jreynoldsMP. At the conference @BoardofDeputies will launch their new workplace guide, which we were pleased to support in development. Workplaces free of racism, of all forms, matter.

I’ll say this, the Ballon d’Or going to the only contender that didn’t spend an entire month shamelessly campaigning for himself is incredibly satisfying
Good. Mechanistic ratchets in MW best avoided. That’s why employment relations specialists, not economists, have always led engagement at LPC. These decisions have human effects and they are best taken with that in mind - not easy political lines. The main rate needs the same.

John Healey will announce plans to increase the minimum wage by nearly 4 per cent but slow the rise for young people after warnings that they are being priced out of jobs
The Times has been told that the national living wage, which applies to those aged 21 and over, is expected to rise from £12.71 to around £13.20 — an increase of 3.9 per cent
However, Healey has decided not to repeat the big rises of the past two budgets in the national minimum wage, which applies to those aged 18 to 21
It will rise broadly in line with the rate for older workers - from £10.85 to around £11.27, an increase of 3.9 per cent
It effectively spells the end of Labour’s manifesto pledge to bring the “discriminatory” minimum wage for young people into line with the living wage for older workers in this parliament
The minimum wage increased by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2026, leading to stark warnings from employers that it risked impeding efforts to get 1 million “Neets” - young people not in education, employment or training - into work.
Healey alluded to the approach in an interview with The Times last week, in which he spoke of the importance of the “trade-off between the level of the minimum wage and the employment rate”

This is tough for a Labour Chancellor - quietly de-emphasising a manifesto commitment on the youth minimum wage, and something that is v popular on his own side.
But this also reflects the evidence that UK unit labour costs have risen the fastest amongst major economies in recent years, and labour demand in those sectors where the minimum “bites” most (retail & hospitality) have seen the biggest hit.
He won’t get much credit for this, but it does speak to a ChX responding to labour market evidence - which is always better than the alternative!

We seem to have a problem with chronically under predicting rail ridership and while it does make for some good news stories it does risk leaving completely viable projects unfunded.
It was predicted 290,000-390,000 passengers would use the new station which opened a year ago today. Instead, more than 800,000 have used the @greateranglia station.
Big week ahead! Yes, @JohnHealey_MP is delivering his first Budget, but it's also prep week for @CIPD Annual Conference @mcr_central next week! We've great line up speakers ready to address the challenges people professionals have - come and join us! events.cipd.co.uk/cipdace
Glad we turned it round, but the attractions of Richardsonball remain a mystery to me. Playing through midfield shouldn’t be banned. Sub-Scottish Championship level stuff for the most part. But a win is a win.
One red card is not enough for that.
