The Reuters report confirms what was already visible: Moscow is shopping for an American investor to restart Nord Stream rather than waiting for a peace deal.
The pipeline that fed Germany before the full-scale invasion is now the centerpiece of talks between Russian and US officials, with Jared Kushner and Kirill Dmitriev named directly. Five unnamed sources.
Berlin and Washington dateline. A business track runs parallel to the war.
The timing is the story.
Witkoff, Kushner, and Dmitriev are pushing hard for a trilateral meeting before the midterms. The goal is not diplomacy.
The goal is to get Trump to delay or weaken the Graham-Blumenthal sanctions before November 3, ideally before October 19. Moscow is frantic because the clock is running out.
The Kremlin understands that once the midterms pass, the political cost of easing sanctions drops, but the window to extract a concession from Trump closes. So the pressure campaign is on.
Rubio just undercut the entire track.
He said there are no visible prospects for a negotiated settlement. Witkoff and Kushner are selling the opposite.
It gives Kyiv a concrete reason to refuse any trilateral before the midterms. Rubio is acting in his own interest, but his interest aligns with Ukraine's here.
A dead diplomatic track leaves nothing to discuss on November 2.
Three traps sit inside any trilateral before the midterms.
First, the commercial trap. Witkoff and Kushner want cover to negotiate business deals with Moscow, including Nord Stream and Lukoil assets.
Ukraine has zero interest in legitimizing that.
Second, the refinery trap. An active information campaign in the US blames Ukrainian strikes on refineries for high gasoline prices.
A trilateral gives that narrative a stage.
Third, the fake peace trap. The pro-Moscow group wants to tell Trump that talks are happening, the war is near its end, and sanctions should not escalate.
The whole play is that.
Ukraine should not walk into it. No trilateral before November 3.
After that, the event can happen somewhere neutral, away from any stage Kushner built for himself.

President Zelenskyy confirming that 22 people were killed by russia in Pryluky, and that russia has killed a further 12 in Kramatorsk this morning. Another animal shelter has been hit in Odesa.

The search-and-rescue operation in Pryluky following the Russian missile strike on the five-story apartment building has now been completed. Sadly, the death toll has risen to 22 people. Five of them were children. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Fifty-four people were injured, including seven children. More than 500 emergency service professionals were involved at the site. I thank every one of them – 15 people have been rescued since yesterday, including a five-year-old child.
And even after such a brutal attack, the Russians continued striking our regions. This morning, Russia hit an ordinary public transport stop in Kramatorsk with an aerial bomb. As of now, 12 people have been confirmed killed. In the evening, a strike on a residential building in Kyiv claimed two lives. My condolences to all the families and loved ones of the victims. Four more people were injured, including two children. In the Odesa region, a Russian drone attack damaged an animal shelter. Energy infrastructure was hit again. Overall, Russian strikes caused destruction in 10 regions.
I am grateful to our partners who did not remain silent yesterday about these Russian crimes. But it is important that support in words take concrete form in new packages for Ukraine’s defense. Supplies of anti-ballistic capabilities, ammunition for our combat aircraft, and investments in interceptors – all of this is directly helping save lives every day. Important talks with our partners will take place today and tomorrow. We expect them to deliver concrete results to strengthen our defense.
