That the UK Prime Minister is showing leadership on a question where he thinks he has public support and the political establishment is shocked tells us quite a lot about the state of politics. rejoinrejoin.substack.com/p/…

Burnham sees the EU question as an increasingly sharp dividing line between Labour and the Tories - he dismisses the suggestion that reopening the Brexit debate is a mistake, but is keen to push the economic arguments to win over sceptical voters

Andy Burnham accuses critics of his decision to re-open the Brexit debate of 'misreading the public mood' in an interview with @HugoGye
'I sense, since conference, that there has been an appetite to discuss it.
'And those who are making the argument over 'oh, my goodness, don't open up this psychodrama' are misreading the public mood in my views'
It should be noted that several members of Burnham's own Cabinet are making precisely that argument behind closed doors...

It was good to see @newswatchbbc cover my story this morning and thank you @SamiraAhmedUK for presenting it. The piece focused in particular on the headline the BBC News website put on its report of my settlement, which appeared to question its size.
Watching, though, I was surprised to hear the BBC's statement that BBC News "cannot independently verify" the amount of the payment to "Ms Kon" (that's me).
If BBC News wanted to verify the size of the settlement, or any of its other terms, all it needed to do was ask. That includes the non-financial remedies, such as the agreement to restore my name to the end credits of the Oscar and BAFTA-winning @MrNobodyAgainstPutin and the other films it had been removed from. I would have been happy to share the relevant sections of the agreement. The BBC lawyer who signed it, as I did, might also have been able to help.
On Monday, an hour or two before the report was published, a senior BBC journalist called me about the story and the overall settlement. He asked if he could record the call, I agreed, and my recollection is that we discussed the details.
I don't want to dwell on this. I don't want to spend the rest of my life arguing with a former employer I still believe it was a privilege to work for. My focus now is to take what I've learned from all this, move on, find a new role and rebuild my life.
As I do that, I hope the BBC will heed this week's calls to do the same: to learn from my experience; to acknowledge the need for, and set up, an independent inquiry into not only how it treats its Jewish staff but how it reflects its Jewish audiences; and to move into a new Charter with commitments that are kept, so that in its second century the BBC is truly for everyone, its staff and its audiences alike.

During a silent patrol, the crew of a Royal Navy Amphion-class submarine investigates an unfamiliar sound echoing through the hull.
In the 125-year history of the Royal Navy Submarine Service nearly 6000 submariners and over 150 submarines never returned. Lest we forget.

How would you vote if there was a referendum on the UK applying to join the EU?
Should apply to join 56%
Should stay out 30%

Reading through the OBR report, found this fascinating nugget given the current hysteria over benefits and disability support: welfare spending is actually 1.2% lower as a share of GDP than it was in 2012/13.

The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors.
For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030.
Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed.
The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change.
The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

In 2010 the BBC Trust threatened to resign if Osborne ended funding for free over-75s licences. It worked - until new Trustees buckled 5 years later
Now the Board is stacked with patsies & seat-warmers, who put padding their CVs above licence fee payers’ interests

Surely better to stockpile a red - because if the power goes down, the white would be room temperature, which would be simply ghastly.

If you need to see how far the left has fallen into a sewer of antisemitism, just look how they react towards a report written on the antisemitism Jewish schoolchildren experience in British schools.
An appalling disgrace that no other community would be expected to tolerate.
