Happening today: @Mglsd_UG and @brac_uganda are hosting the national Ultra-Poor Graduation Model & The Self Reliance Index Symposium at the Mestil Hotel, Kampala #UPGRSISymposium2026.
Guided by insights from Dr.Fred Muhumuza Makerere University Business School - MUBS Main Campus, the conversation is tackling three critical questions for Uganda's development pathway:
1. What is graduation? Moving beyond short-term aid to provide a time-bound, sequenced pathway that exits households from extreme poverty into sustainable livelihoods.
2. How confident are we that Ugandan households are becoming self-sufficient? Evaluating how foundational support transforms into long-term socio-economic resilience.
3. How do we measure graduation in progress? Utilizing data-driven tools like the Self-Reliance Index (SRI) to track household growth.
The 4 Pillars of the Graduation Approach
To achieve true autonomy, the BRAC Graduation Approach fastens together four interconnected core objectives:
* Social Protection: Consumption support, health care access, and crisis relief to safeguard families against immediate shocks.
* Livelihood Promotion: Asset transfers (livestock/goods) paired with technical skills training to generate resilient streams of income.
* Financial Inclusion: Introducing informal savings groups (VSLAs) and financial literacy to build strong household capital.
* Social Empowerment: Life-skills coaching, confidence building, and community integration to ensure marginalized households have a voice.
By shifting the focus from mere poverty reduction to total self-reliance, this symposium highlights how structured coordination can complement existing national initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM). @NaomiAyot, @Josmay7720, @onamamathias,@musana_raymond

We are proud to advance the localization agenda in Uganda! As a member on the Government of Uganda’s National Localization Task Force! Today, we join the CRRF Secretariat in Uganda for a critical strategy retreat to collaborate with the lead consultant hired by @CAREUganda. Our Goal: Finetune the national localization strategy before it is presented to the Minister by the end of October 2026. Nelson Balyeku (MEAL Head, @OPMUganda) demonstrated how the Partnership Coordination & Monitoring System (PCMS) is transforming refugee response tracking: Closing Delivery Gaps: The PCMS addresses weak information sharing, eliminates duplicated services, and elevates financial transparency. In terms of Legal Compliance: Mr. Balyeku reminded all actors that per Sections 5 and 63(1) of the Refugee Act, registering with the OPM is a strict legal requirement to operate in the country. The PCMS continues to be an absolute game-changer ensuring local and international partners remain accountable, transparent, and united.

Today marks Day 3 of the SHG Phase II planning workshop for #LCAUganda!
We are deeply honored to be joined by the Executive Directors of our respective LCA member organizations.
We kicked off the day by reviewing the Coalition’s core funding priorities and the strategic rationale for supporting LCA Uganda's future:
· Sustain the coalition beyond donor-funded projects
· Reduce dependence on external donors
· Strengthen and diversify fundraising systems
· Build strategic partnerships and local ownership
· Ensure long-term financial sustainability and responsiveness
A key highlight from mourning session discussions centered on fundraising through strategic partnerships with corporate businesses via CSR. Mr. @jimodyek, ED of @ACODEVU shared valuable insights on this as an already proven strategy that LCA is eager to tap into and scale.

A core takeaway from our discussions so far is the vital integration of #SRHR into our Coalition programming as we work to scale the SHG project.
Our fundraising strategy and roadmap under development will position SRHR as a critical pillar of our work, while simultaneously strengthening the Coalition's institutional capacity to ensure long-term sustainability well beyond our current modus operandi.

Happening today!
Following the successful completion of Phase I (June 2024–2025), which deepened the Coalition’s engagement with Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Uganda by forming groups, strengthening member capacities, and piloting microgrants, we are now launching Phase II.
Phase II focuses on building the Coalition’s long-term capacity to fund, coordinate, and sustain this work. Specifically, it will:
1. Drive strategic resource mobilization to scale SHG support
2. Strengthen Coalition coordination and systems for SHG programming
3. Build capacity to integrate sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) into SHG support.
To kick-start Phase II, the Coalition, @Warande254 , and @thesharetrust are convening a structured 3 day workshop today. The session will review current SHG support, share lessons learned, identify good practices, and explore opportunities for SRHR integration.
