Excited to share our latest work with the bullock lab! We looked at how diverse mRNAs get selected for subcellular localization and it turns out that a single protein can recognize different RNA elements using shared features that weren’t apparent before. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

My first PhD student, Emma Hanford (nee Gleave), made some cysteine-lite dynein constructs in 2013. 11 years later, thanks to MinFlux, Joseph Slivka and @Yildiz_Lab they have been used in a nice biorxiv paper. doi.org/10.1101/2024.07.16.6…

In yesterday's #journalclub, we had a look at the interesting mechanism by which the UNC-104 motor (Kinesin-3 KIF1A homologue in C. elegans) is stabilised on Rab-3-containing synaptic vesicles - by Bhan and colleagues biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Outstanding work from the Zhang lab on helping clarify dynein's complicated mechanochemical cycle #journalclub
How does dynein cycle its conformations and takes one step forward along the MT? Check out our exciting new results unveiling the atomic details of the conformational space of Reactive Full-length Human Dynein-1, on and off microtubules: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

We also demonstrate that ScaC activates BICD2 by breaking up its autoinhibitory interactions. Activated BICD2 is able to bind dynein/dynactin and initiate transport of Orientia along microtubules. (5/6)

We show that ScaC can cluster mitochondria to the perinucleus in artificial organelle relocation assays. This tells us that ScaC does not need other bacterial proteins to engage dynein! (4/6)

Check out this stunning animation by @janetiwasa (in collaboration with @SamReckPeterson), showcasing our model of how various components come together to form active dynein complexes capable of transporting cellular cargo.
Our work on how the lysosomal adaptor JIP3, and regulator LIS1 activate the dynein motor protein is now out in @ScienceMagazine ! science.org/doi/10.1126/scie… Many thanks to our reviewers and editor for their valuable input.

Today in #journalclub we covered the beautiful, hot off the press paper by the Roberts lab, revealing structures of dynein-2 and importance of the intermediate chain proteins (particularly WDR60 NTD) in cilia assembly and tethering of dynein to IFT trains. embopress.org/doi/full/10.10…
