There are times when BELIEVING IN YOURSELF feels like an ACT OF REBELLION. Oh, but what a BEAUTIFUL, POWERFUL, COURAGEOUS act of rebellion.

Behind the meter gas power has become a common path for data centers to get power faster. But it turns out operating a city-scale utility is no joke (turbine shafts breaking, low uptimes). It's hell for social licenes (if you think communities hate data centers, try data centers with 40 jet engines running non-stop!). And it leaves these facilities quite exposed to future gas price risk, as Aniruddh illustrates below.
Interesting sections on energy in Anthropic's S1 filing!
There's been speculation on how data centers are managing fuel price risk from gas offtake, whether off-grid data centers will happen at scale
- 'an increasing share of data centers being developed with dedicated onsite generation independent of the grid'
- ANT exposed to fuel price volatility as they bear cost on a pass-through basis, no cap on fuel costs
- Lack of firm gas supply can delay facilities
- For grid connected assets, ANT discusses 'investing in curtailment systems' to reduce strain during peak periods
- Cooling needs may increase over time for data centers due to changing climate
- Notes risk that utilities may reallocate capacity required by ANT data centers

“Everybody talks about the nuclear renaissance... but now we're actually building stuff and it's happening right here. This is a nuclear hub in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.”
Great to host @ENERGY Asst. Secretary Tim Walsh today at our TRISO-X campus in Oak Ridge, and we couldn't agree with him more!

2 years ago, i had done zero marketing. i'd been an engineer my entire life.
when i told a founder friend we were building a consumer product, he told me, "tanay, you don't have that consumer dna. you don't know how to build a brand. you shouldn't do this."
it sounded like a fun challenge. game on.
2 months after we pivoted Wispr from hardware to Flow, our first launch did millions of views and hit #1 on product hunt for the day and the week.
what i've learned about marketing since:
1/ take almost no inspiration from others. standing out means doing things your own way. be unique and bold in your decisions.
2/ pick your first users by who will cause PLG. hundreds of avatars of people loved wispr flow. we focused on 2. developers, because they post about tools they love everywhere. founders, because they roll them out to their whole team.
3/ make every user feel it was built for people like them. most tools assume american english. in wispr you can pick british english, swiss german, or simplified vs traditional chinese
4/ build small moments that make people feel seen. in india, after you've spoken 1,000 words in an indian language, a banner says congratulations in that language, with the flag
5/ do pr even if you can't measure it. if i put its roi in a spreadsheet, the column would be empty. but asking what i'd pitch a journalist about every new feature gives us a lot of our ad ideas
6/ make the message something you can see, touch, feel. have fun with it. we said we'd kill the keyboard, so i sawed one in half in our office for a launch video
7/ treat word of mouth as a science, not an art. after we hit product-market fit, the first thing we optimized for was getting every user to tell their friends
turns out you don't need consumer dna or to be the most creative. you just need to treat marketing like a science.
Last week, a light bulb went off in my Story Researcher (*) brain after seeing a Jon Wertheim story about helium. Less than a week later, the Energy Department designated helium a critical mineral.
Supply chains!!

Fascinating. Troubling. And another sign of why supply chains are often the least sexy and most critical part of a story: the helium edition. lnkd.in/p/es8YXZ89

Together with @AEPnews and @Amazon, we’re advancing a nearly 1 GW nuclear project in Indiana, our second project under a broader collaboration with Amazon to bring more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity to the U.S. grid by 2039.
The proposed project would add clean, reliable power to the regional grid, helping meet growing energy demand while creating opportunities for long-term economic development.

My take on the new permitting reform bill @ForeignPolicy. It is among the most important policy measures in decades to advance clean energy, meet rising energy needs, and rein in soaring energy prices--and very likely to lead to a net reduction in carbon emissions. When paired with strong climate policy, it is also necessary to allow the rapid buildout of infrastructure needed to drive emissions sharply down. Rejecting it because it may also benefit oil and gas projects would sacrifice a historic opportunity to advance American security, affordability, and clean energy goals simultaneously.

The recent wave of "power uprates" is an efficient way to get more power from the reactors we already have.
They're being driven, at least in part, by the AI-driven race for power. They are also a way for the nuclear industry to start building again.

The next generation of nuclear energy is taking shape on American factory floors.
We recently joined SGL Carbon in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, to celebrate expanded manufacturing capacity and the people making that progress possible. SGL is already producing nuclear-grade graphite components for our first planned Xe-100 deployment with Dow, supported by the @ENERGY's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP). That work is an important step in delivering the specialized components at the core of our reactor.

Spend two hours today listening to the smartest person I know on permitting (@DanielPalken) talk with @drvolts about why we should pass BAAJA. Rude that it’s longer than my pod with Dave, but fine.

Build. Learn. Repeat.
Small modular reactors are designed to learn from each deployment, improving manufacturing, increasing quality, and building more efficiently over time.
Our latest video with @Amazon looks at how repeatability could help meet growing demand for clean, reliable energy.

Dispatches from a battery developer Part 2! The SUPPLY of batteries that meet all of the current regulations is not enough to keep up with DEMAND and that problem is only going to become more acute. Dear reader, buckle up for some nerdy supply chain talk. linkedin.com/posts/catcliffo…
I swung down to Fidi during #ClimateWeek for a fireside chat between the CEO of Modo Energy, Quentin 'Q' Scrimshire, and the CEO of @jupiterpowerllc, Andy Bowman.
Being a battery storage developer over the last decade has been a wild ride. What a story!

Thursday last week, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill that would provide $10 billion in funding for fusion. Wednesday last week, I heard @CFS_energy CEO @BobMumgaard make a compelling case for why that's necessary. ⤵️ linkedin.com/posts/catcliffo…

I spent the week embedded in the Geothermal House at the @CERAWeek conference in Houston last week on behalf of Project @innerspace2030.
One highlight was interviewing Rod Colwell, CEO of Controlled Thermal Resources Holdings, Inc., in a fireside chat: linkedin.com/feed/update/urn…
The deeper I get into geothermal, the more I learn that the story of geothermal is a story of UNTAPPED POTENTIAL.
When I came across this chart (below) in @innerspace2030 report on The Future of Geothermal in Texas, it stopped me in my tracks.
