Teaching for @CatherineProj has actually made the difference between these different types of students very clear to me! Love both types of students a lot, but it's amazing to work with students who want to be there, are ready to contribute, and don't look to you as a shopkeeper

“A crucial step [to philosophy] is getting confused about things. Not understanding what’s going on, and trying to articulate what your confusions are so that you can resolve them.”
That’s all fine and whatever, but how tf you get past the confused step???

Did Emerson’s Self-Reliance with @CatherineProj tonight and had a common experience: reading the essay ahead of time, I did not care for it. But once discussing it, I found it is actually enormously rich. One of the best things about communal reading.
Do you hear the buzzing, chattering sound today of thousands of people discussing Self-Reliance?

PS: Reading this with the @CatherineProj, which is a fantastic way to read such dense big books -- forces discipline, and the discussions bring out so much

P.P.S. LECTIO DIFFICILIOR POTIOR, "the more difficult reading is preferable", would be an excellent motto for @CatherineProj and other 'Great Books' programs. Read harder books! What's the best long read for a hibernating bear with insomnia? @zenahitz @JaycelAdkins @NZaidka
