We cannot celebrate women’s environmental stewardship while ignoring the structural barriers that limit their impact.
From land preparation & food processing to family care, women shoulder the responsibilities that sustain our communities!
Are we supporting them enough?

Land restoration cannot be separated from women’s rights & livelihoods.
Women are playing a central role in restoring & caring for land as farmers & community leaders.
However, there’s need for inclusive climate finance, improved land governance to ensure they reap the benefits.

On October 14th, 2026, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, directed Gov’t to halt enforcement of the charcoal ban until the Minister for Energy & Mineral Development presents a comprehensive report on uptake, affordability & readiness of alternative energy sources.
Uganda has the strategy according to the Energy Transition Plan(2023)!
What is missing is delivery at the household gate & sequencing that protects women while delivery catches up.

Improved #CleanEnergy is a health intervention to which women have a right & yet during this “𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐧” debate, almost nobody is speaking about the person who actually dominates its usage-the WOMAN!
The forest & woman at the stove move hand-in-hand. Therefore any Just energy-transition MUST protect the forest & the woman who dominates as the end-user.

There are a variety of #CleanEnergy solutions available for Ugandans, however, these remain out of reach due to affordability, a barrier we must confront!
While over 90% of Ugandan households still rely on firewood or charcoal, cleaner options like Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG),e-Cooking & biogas remain financially out of reach for due to high refill & electricity costs.
In our report, affordability accounts for 45% as a challenge to women’s access to clean energy.
Qtn: Is the energy system designed around the financial reality?

People affected by climate change policies & services must help shape them, especially women who are the immediate custodians of the environment.
True climate resilience happens when we shift from treating women as passive observers to honoring them as rightful custodians of their land.
♻️Shift decision-making authority directly into the hands of those with lived experience.
✅Elevate Women as Custodians:
⚖️Women must be actively engaged from inception through to evaluation, long before recovery resources & funding priorities are locked in.
When we build climate systems around the people who understand the land best, the entire ecosystem benefits.
#ActNow: Let's move beyond consultation & start practicing true co-creation.

Let’s grow a sustainable future together🌱

Our research brief using the CLEAR tool, into Uganda’s ETP,launched at COP28 in 2023, found that the plan sets population-wide clean cooking & electricity targets but lacks a gender-specific target inside those numbers!
It can’t be a successful plan if leaves out the rural woman.
𝐀𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟑𝟏, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟒 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬;
1. Add gender targets inside the ETPs so progress can actually be measured.
2. Put women on the energy planning committees at district & national level.
3. Design clean energy loans that fit village savings groups especially women-led.
4. Run a gender & safety check on every energy project before its approval.

Meaningful change happens when people come together to share ideas, strengthen partnerships, and turn commitments into action.
That's why Equality 🚻is a necessity in the advancing of the human rights agenda especially during decision making.
Women too, MUST have a seat at the table!⚖️

It’s now October, as we countdown ⏰ 38days🗓️ to COP31
The 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒆́𝒎 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏📋agreed at COP30, calls for climate action to be gender responsive, including in how finance💰 works.
In plain language, the money for climate action should serve women too, not just mention them.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭?
Progress is possible, but protecting & advancing women’s & girls’ rights requires sustained action.
Climate finance for Uganda should set a real share for grassroots women's groups, with reporting rules that a village group can actually manage.
We need to ensure grassroots fossil project-affected women groups have the resources & support to keep driving change through diverse livelihood recovery ventures while challenging climate impacts.

In 2025, we stood with Indigenous peoples & local communities protecting Bugoma,Budongo Forests & Murchison Falls National Park. In Kikuube district, we sat with forest-host communities from 21 villages to plan joint advocacy against oil, land grabbing, & sugarcane expansion.
Together with
“𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐠𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭” Campaign partners, we asked the Ministry of Lands & NFA to release the forest boundary opening report.
If the digital agenda can help monitor & map encroachment early, then technology becomes a friend of the ecosystem.
That is a conversation we MUST inclusively have.

Oil wealth that is counted in barrels but in women’s lost livelihoods is a debt our communities are paying.
What we need for our communities is clean energy investment, fair compensation, restored access to land & water & protection of our forests & lakes.

AFIEGO joined nearly 60 East African CSOs and oil-affected community groups to challenge Uganda's "Pearl Sweet" oil🛢️ narrative.
For many 👨👩👧👦communities, oil has meant displacement, inadequate compensation & environmental harm.
