For more than a century, scientists thought that Broca's area coordinates the muscle movements required to speak. But new @UCSF research from @ChangLabUCSF identifies the key role that the middle precentral gyrus (mPrCG) plays in this process. @jessierliu l8r.it/ua64

My postdoc paper is out :) We examined the brain mechanisms underlying naturalistic affective behaviors(e.g., smiling) from epilepsy patients. Thanks to Chang lab @ChangLabUcsf, and amazing co-authos @ANKhambhati and Dr. Sturm @brainsturming nature.com/articles/s41562-0…

No treatment helped her depression — until this. In a first, a "pacemaker for the brain" has successfully treated a case of severe depression. "Within a few weeks, the suicidal thoughts just disappeared," said the first participant in the unusual study. nyti.ms/3DgkPhT

Big new study out today! Long-term brain 🧠 network/circuit reorganization may be a main reason why responsive neurostimulation reduces seizures over time -- Congrats to study lead @ANKhambhati, and Alia Shafi, Vikram Rao, and Edward Chang @ChangLabUcsf stm.sciencemag.org/content/1…
It’s been a long road to get here, but our paper (with @YuliaOganian, @ChangLabUcsf, and Jeffery Hall) is now out in @CellCellPress! We found that speech processing may partly bypass A1 using ECoG recordings, stimulation, and an ablation case study. authors.elsevier.com/c/1dbe2…

He has been unable to speak since he was paralyzed in 2003. Now, in a once unimagined accomplishment, an implant in the speech area of his brain is starting to give him back a voice. "It's very much like getting a second chance to talk again." nyti.ms/3yYiRk2

A man who is unable to move or speak can now generate words and sentences on a computer using only his thoughts, thanks to an experimental implanted device that decodes signals in the man's brain that once control his vocal tract. trib.al/467zQKh
