2/ After the war, Csuri returned to Ohio State, where he trained as a painter and sculptor before becoming an art professor at 30. He taught alongside Roy Lichtenstein, who became a close friend and, later, the best man at his wedding.

CHARLES CSURI | ORDO This October, from @solos_gallery A few months ago, @RagnarDigital introduced me to Caroline Csuri, digital artist and daughter of Charles Csuri - a connection I'm endlessly grateful for. Over several conversations, Caroline shared her father's story in a way no catalogue or textbook ever could. This is what I learned. 🪡

1967: "But @CharlesCsuri has plans to go far beyond the drawn lines which he now gets from a computer… Now, he says, Shaffer has solved the programming problems to work with a computer-controlling milling machine to cut plastic or metal into sculpture." nitter.cf/artmetaofficial/status…
1967: "...[Charles Csuri] believes, the artist will 'have conversations' with the computer & the two of them together will decide how to create art — the artist will think about a picture or artistic image & a computer will translate his brain impulses into a creation."

Charles Csuri: "You can't imagine what it was like in 1965... as an artist to be involved with computers, it was not easy. When you are doing something for the first time, people simply don't understand, and they are very irritated by it for a very, very long time."

Following the screening, MoMA would acquire Charles Csuri & James Shaffer’s Hummingbird (1967) for the permanent collection — one of the first computer-generated artworks to ever enter the collection. Created with an IBM 7094 and Calcomp Drum Plotter Model 565, the work is one of Csuri's earliest computer animations. Below: Clip from Hummingbird by Charles Csuri & James Shaffer, 1967. On Veterans Day we honor the brave men and women who fought for our freedom. Csuri was profoundly affected by war that was expressed through his art. The concept of the randomness of life and death in war began with his iconic picture Random War 1967 and beyond.
