Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signals Christa Pike's death sentence is unlikely to change after the convicted killer survived a failed lethal injection on Sept. 30 — and her attorneys push for commutation to life without parole. "I suspect her sentence will be the same as it was before unless determined otherwise by the courts," Lee said. Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps participant in Knoxville. Investigators say Pike's throat was cut multiple times, she was struck in the head with a large piece of asphalt, and a pentagram was carved into her chest. Pike later confessed. A former Knoxville police chief who investigated the case said Pike was "ruthless" and "almost giddy" recounting the killing — even bragging about it in class the next day and showing off blood-stained shoes.
