Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead.
You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement.
I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible.
But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier.
Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want.
Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well.
So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it.
If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.

It’s easy to feel safe when you have the biggest security detail ever for a Mayor of Chicago.
Mayor Johnson has 150 officers protecting him while Chicago is short over 1,000 cops. He'll never answer for that - but I will.
We need to put more police on the streets where they belong - protecting you. As your Mayor, I will do that on Day 1.
Watch this.

Someone asked if you could decompose GDP to show impact of population growth. This chart shows how much population growth and growth in real GDP per resident (which embeds productivity) contributed to total GDP growth. There are real fiscal costs to Chicago’s lousy growth record.

The most dangerous politician is one who raises taxes and fees not because government needs the money, but simply because they can.
@GovPritzker appoints the Illinois Tollway Board. The Tollway is flush with cash, yet drivers are being asked to pay even more.
This isn’t necessity. It’s contempt for taxpayers.
Illinois Tollway wants a 57% passenger toll hike even though it already collects $1.3 billion more each year than it spends on the roads. Drivers still face endless construction on I-294, I-90, and I-88 every summer.
A 57% jump would cost the average daily driver an extra $225 a year, with automatic increases locked in after 2029.
83% of online comments said no to the largest passenger toll hike in Illinois history. The other 11% must be living under a rock. Opposition that strong means residents deserve a real vote.
True to form, Pritzker’s Tollway board meets August 19 to approve it.
After all, @JBPritzker rarely met a tax hike he didn’t rubber-stamp.

🚨 BOOM! SPENCER PRATT JUST DROPPED THIS LINE ON MAYOR MAMDANI:
"The communist doesn’t think to increase the quality of the grid. The communist demands that you decrease the quality of your life. They make you ration the things that every other American gets to enjoy. Every single time."
💯💯
He's right. Mamdani wants everyone to suffer and raise their thermostats so the elites have the power they need.
Communism will LOSE nationwide 🇺🇸 @spencerpratt

We're going to curb the city's addiction to spending, stop the hemorrhaging of our finances, and find efficiencies everywhere we can.
We'll provide better service at lower cost. I did it as City Clerk and I did it as Comptroller.
And as Mayor, I'll deliver a city that works and honors the hard work of every taxpayer. #chicago

🚨 JUST IN: The Fake News claims JD Vance is considering "ABANDONING" a 2028 presidential campaign because he's "ISOLATED" from President Trump
Yet ANOTHER obvious attempt to drive a wedge and division.
We love JD, Trump loves JD, AND THAT'S NOT CHANGING! 🇺🇸
JD is working hard for America. He'll figure out 2028 when he gets to it.
The smears and attempts to divide won't work.

NEW: Chicago’s greatest challenge is not a lack of natural resources. Nor top-tier universities. Nor basic infrastructure.
It is the compounded effect of decades of poor financial decisions.

A preventable tragedy. Sheridan Gorman was murdered by an illegal alien released into the U.S. in 2023 under the Biden administration — a direct result of failed border & sanctuary city policies.
The Trump Admin is working hard to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Prayers are with her loved ones. ❤️

Chicago media is getting justifiably pummeled for its handling of the execution of Loyola Univ freshman Sheridan Gorman by an illegal Venezuelan.
The Sun-Times "she had it coming" headline prompted nationwide condemnation for victim-blaming.
And today is the FIRST day the that Gorman's murder, which happened on March 19, made the front page of the Chicago Tribune. And one can only assume the Trib finally gave the heinous crime the attention it deserves after much public backlash over the past several days.
Shameful and inexcusable coverup by local media:

BREAKING: DHS confirms that the suspect in custody for murdering Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman in Chicago is a Venezuelan illegal alien who was caught & released at the border by the Biden administration in May 2023. DHS says he was also released from local custody after a shoplifting arrest in the sanctuary city of Chicago on June 19, 2023.
DHS identifies the suspect as Venezuelan national Jose Medina-Medina. Medina-Medina is accused of approaching Gorman while she was walking in a park with friends early Thursday morning.
DHS says Medina-Medina came up to her while wearing a mask and armed with a gun. As she attempted to flee, he fired his gun and shot her. Gorman was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
DHS statement:
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life. She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “We are calling on Governor Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods.”

Sheridan Gorman's murder would have been avoided if 39 loser, spineless, blithering idiot aldermen had taken crimes committed by illegal immigrants seriously.
Gorman's death is on all 39 aldermen who voted "Yea."
BREAKING: Multiple Chicago police sources tell me a Venezuelan migrant is in custody for questioning in relation to the heinous shooting death of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman. CPD tells Fox that Gorman, from Westchester County NY, was walking with friends along Chicago's lake front around 1:30 AM Thursday when a "unknown male offender" opened fire at the group, hitting Gorman in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Developing story.
