How the late MIT plasma physicist Nuno Loureiro cracked one of the most important 50-year problems in plasma physics — and why it may matter enormously for fusion energy.
🦋⚛️☀️🧲
A thread:
1/
For decades plasma physics had a problem.
Magnetic reconnection clearly happens explosively in nature:
solar flares
magnetospheric storms
fusion plasmas
Yet the classical Sweet–Parker model predicted reconnection should become extremely SLOW in highly conducting plasma.
Nature disagreed.
2/
Nuno F. G. Loureiro and colleagues realized something profound:
The long, thin Sweet–Parker current sheet assumed by the classical theory DOESN’T STAY SMOOTH.
At sufficiently high Lundquist number, the sheet becomes violently unstable.
It fragments.
3/
Instead of one continuous current sheet:
────────────
the plasma spontaneously creates a chain of magnetic islands:
──◉──◉─◉──◉──
These are plasmoids.
And the instability gets FASTER as the Lundquist number rises.
That inverted an important part of the old intuition.
4/
Their 2007 result found approximately:
γmax ∝ S¹⁄⁴
while the number of plasmoids scales roughly:
N ∝ S³⁄⁸
So as the plasma becomes increasingly ideal and highly conducting, the current sheet doesn’t necessarily become more stable.
It can become MORE violently unstable.
5/
That matters because fusion plasmas operate in precisely the regime where magnetic topology becomes everything.
Tokamaks try to maintain a hot magnetically confined plasma long enough for fusion reactions to occur.
But reconnection drives or contributes to phenomena including:
sawtooth crashes
tearing modes
disruptions
rapid energy redistribution
6/
Loureiro’s insight does NOT replace the tokamak.
A tokamak is a confinement architecture.
His breakthrough concerned the fundamental physics occurring INSIDE magnetized plasmas.
In effect:
Tokamak engineering asks:
“How do we confine this plasma?”
Loureiro asks:
“When will its magnetic structure spontaneously reorganize anyway?”
7/
That distinction could be enormously important for practical fusion.
If current sheets naturally fragment into plasmoid chains before reaching the classical Sweet–Parker state, fusion simulations need to predict:
when fragmentation starts
how quickly reconnection accelerates
where energy goes
how large plasmoids become
whether they trigger larger instabilities
8/
Later work by Loureiro and collaborators pushed the idea further:
plasmoid formation → reconnection → new current sheets → more plasmoids → merging/ejection → further reconnection.
A hierarchical feedback process.
At sufficiently high Lundquist number, reconnection can become effectively FAST rather than slowing continuously as classical Sweet–Parker theory predicts.
9/
And here is the fascinating Sun–Earth connection:
YES — Loureiro explicitly treated astrophysical and fusion reconnection as manifestations of the same underlying physics.
He cited:
solar flares
CMEs
solar-wind turbulence
magnetospheric substorms
tokamak sawteeth and tearing modes
as interconnected plasma-physics problems.
10/
But an important distinction:
His famous 2007 plasmoid discovery was NOT derived specifically from a Sun→Earth plasma connection.
It was a general calculation of the stability of a high-Lundquist-number current sheet in resistive magnetohydrodynamics.
The Sun and magnetosphere are natural laboratories where the same physics appears.
11/
In fact, Loureiro later called the solar wind:
“the best plasma turbulence laboratory we have.”
Why?
Because spacecraft let us measure naturally occurring magnetized plasma on scales impossible to reproduce completely inside a laboratory.
Space plasma can therefore test theories relevant to fusion.
12/
This creates a beautiful feedback loop between astrophysics and fusion research:

The smelter comparison is sharper than it looks. In aluminum the current is the chemistry, not overhead, since it is what pulls the metal out of the ore, about 13,000 kWh a ton. A data center turns power into heat, a smelter turns it into metal.
