In a full-scale conventional war against NATO with US participation, Russiaโs current military would be severely outmatched and could not sustain operations for long. No more than three or four weeks. Without US involvement that would stretch to around 4 months.
The Ukraine war has imposed major constraints:
High cumulative losses in personnel and equipment have degraded unit quality, experience levels, and modern armor stocks. Soviet-era reserves are largely depleted.
Large portions of Russiaโs ground forces remain committed to Ukraine. To generate additional high-quality formations while fighting there at the current level is difficult.
NATO holds clear advantages in air power, precision strike, logistics, intelligence/surveillance, and combined-arms integration. Aggregate NATO numbers personnel, aircraft, naval forces, tanks are substantially larger even without the US.
Analysts and NATO assessments generally conclude that Russia is currently too stretched for a major conventional conflict with the alliance. Danish and other Western intelligence have described the risk of a large-scale invasion as low in the near term, while noting growing risks of hybrid or limited actions designed to test cohesion. Some European assessments project that Russia could reconstitute enough capability for more serious regional threats on a multi-year timeline depending on how the Ukraine war ends and the pace of production.
Two important caveats:
Russia retains a large nuclear arsenal, which is the primary deterrent against any direct large-scale conventional war with NATO. Nuclear escalation risks dominate any serious comparison.
Russia has adapted during the war (mass drone and missile production, tactical learning, industrial output of certain systems) and continues hybrid pressure (airspace probes, sabotage, infrastructure threats). These raise the cost of deterrence but do not equate to the ability to win a sustained conventional war against the alliance.
In short, Russia can continue a grinding war of attrition against Ukraine and conduct coercive or hybrid activities against NATO members. It cannot, on current evidence, cope with a major conventional war against NATO without facing rapid and severe conventional defeat, with nuclear weapons as the ultimate backstop.

๐จ NEW: Laura Kuenssberg has revealed a Government Minister may have wanted a threesome with her after she arrived for an interview in his hotel room to find him on the bed shirtless with his partner waiting
"It was very uncomfortable"
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The original description from Kuenssberg's book, as reported in The Times, states she found the minister with "his shirt undone several buttons too many," not shirtless. Multiple outlets quote the same wording.
