Borrowing was £77.3 billion in the financial year (FY) to August 2026, £8.1 billion above the OBR forecast. Am pretty sure there's been a union chief on the Court (board) of the Bank of England since the 50s. So this isn't really a case of Healey plotting a socialist takeover of the central bank.

Fair to ask exactly what Paul Nowak brings to the Bank of England but he is just replacing his predecessor Frances O'Grady who, as TUC chief, was appointed to the Court of the Bank by Philip Hammond in 2019. O'Grady replaced union boss Dave Prentis, appointed under Osborne.
