A strong Social Europe starts locally!
Today, I signed a Joint Action Plan with the EU Committee of the Regions to turn European priorities into local action.
Our focus: fighting poverty, supporting quality jobs, improving access to skills and leaving no community behind.
EU competitiveness and prosperity need Regions and cities’ capacity to plan and deliver targeted investment in the long-term. Competitiveness does not depend on a few strong areas, but from spreading innovation and growth across our Single Market
#EURegionsWeek @carlatavares_ps
We reject a budget proposal with a size, architecture & governance which are blind to our different territories and needs. This is the clear message delivered today with @carlatavares_ps, EP co-rapporteur for MFF 2028–2034. With @JuanMa_Moreno @sarirautio

During the #EURegionsWeek opening session, local & regional leaders warn:
📢 The next EU budget risks concentrating decisions in national capitals and opportunities in the strongest regions.
That would deepen disparities and weaken Europe’s economic potential.

I reject the labelling of Cohesion Policy as a “policy of the past”. It is a competitiveness investment policy that sees places, builds their capabilities and connects them to Europe’s economy.
The next #EUBudget risks replacing that ambition

“Do no harm to cohesion” means nothing if the budget’s architecture deepens territorial divides. Without funding and binding guarantees, it is just another slogan.

Europe’s promise is shared prosperity: that every region has a chance to contribute to —and benefit from— our competitiveness. Cohesion Policy keeps that promise alive. Breaking it makes Europe fragile. A clear message from 17 Member States that the next EU budget must heed.
Together with @NicusorDanRO 🇷🇴, we united 17 Friends of Cohesion EU Member States around a common objective: preserving Agriculture and Cohesion as central priorities in the next European budget, while ensuring adequate resources to address Europe’s new challenges.
We strongly believe this is doable – and we addressed a joint letter to @MichealMartinTD 🇮🇪 as Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 @Ireland2026eu, ahead of the next steps in the MFF negotiations.
Meeting V4 ministers 🇸🇰🇨🇿🇭🇺🇵🇱 and EVP @RaffaeleFitto in Slovakia, we discussed how Cohesion Policy must evolve to meet new challenges while remaining Europe’s essential reinvestment mechanism
Europe’s strength comes from being a network of different but complementary capabilities. Our investment architecture should work like a network too.
Some challenges require greater European scale. But scale should not automatically mean centralisation.
