Patrick Swanson

Six years ago today, Morgan's story was shared with the world through an ESPN article written by @emilymkaplan Since then, @MorganUrso has become an incredible advocate for mental health, reminding us why it is so important to keep the conversation going, especially when it comes to our young athletes. Anyone who has played for me knows I have high expectations. I push my players, hold them accountable, and expect their best. But I also believe that getting to know them as individuals, checking in on them, and making sure they know I am always there for them is just as important. Being a tough coach doesn't mean you can't be a caring coach. You can hold athletes accountable while still making sure they know you care about them as people, not just players. When Morgan was struggling, she did what we encourage our kids to do. She spoke up and asked for help. Unfortunately, instead of receiving the support she needed, she was pushed away from the sport she loved. That should never happen to another young athlete. Through our #TEAMMORGAN programs, we are grateful to work with student-athletes from @SXUFootball and @SXUsoftball .We are also thankful that Kelly continues to share Morgan's story each year with students at @StLaurenceVikes , while also helping us expand our #TEAMMORGAN mental health awareness and training programs. Morgan said, "No kid should have to go through what I went through." We don't have to be mental health professionals to make a difference. Sometimes it starts with simply listening, checking in, and letting someone know they aren't alone. It starts with us. You never know whose life you might change. #TEAMMORGAN #MentalHealthMatters #StudentAthleteMentalHealth Read Morgan’s story: espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/3020…
